Synergy’s Series Of Unfortunate Events

Drake Chambers and Frightmare sent the crowd home happy after several match changes.

Black Saturday was a reminder that in pro wrestling (and life in general) the card is subject to change.

Of the four marquee matches advertised for Synergy Pro Wrestling’s event last Saturday, only one took place. Several real-life incidents caused massive changes to what was the one-year-old promotion’s most anticipated show to date.

The biggest disappointment was Abyss having to back out due to his mother being sent to the emergency room. Fans were alerted hours before the show via social media, and the Impact Wrestling Hall of Famer sent a video apologizing for the situation. Synergy did its best to deliver the guaranteed battle of monster and beast, as former NXT talent Bull James filled in to take on Kyle The Beast (KTB). The behemoths brawled all over the VFW hall, with KTB struggling to lift the 300-pounder. Eventually, he summoned the strength to slam James, following up with a Lionsault for the victory.

As “Thank You Bull” chants echoed throughout the building, James grabbed the mic to reminisce about wrestling in the venue when he was cutting his teeth in the business over a decade ago. Praising KTB as the “hidden gem of the independents,” James offered to clash again whenever the opportunity arose.

Another major blow was the absence of Synergy Champion Matt Tremont. Originally scheduled for two shows – defending the gold against Anthony Greene at Synergy and meeting Eric Ryan in a deathmatch at GCW – Tremont was unable to attend due to his wife being hospitalized. As a result, Greene teamed with the “Platinum Hunnie” Ava Everett to face Mike Orlando and Allie Recks.

A harbinger of the newly announced mixed tag team division coming to Synergy in the spring, the two couples delighted the packed crowd in a very entertaining spectacle. From Recks hip tossing everybody in sight (including her partner and even the referee) to Greene gobbling up some Platinum yams to everybody headbutting somebody else’s crotch, this match had all the hijinks we’ve come to love from the “Retrosexual.”

In the midst of all the tomfoolery, Everett rolled up Recks from behind for the three count. Afterward, Greene and his ladies brought a young fan in the ring to celebrate, making Scotty 2 Hotty proud with a couple of Worms. Suddenly, Logan Black and his henchmen hit the ring, mauling Greene as the Hunnies cried for help. The pack of psychopaths finally retreated after the damage had been done, leaving the crowd was stunned to silence.

The third match that was cancelled consisted of Brandon Kirk vs. Jimmy Lloyd in a chairs match, with “Monsta” Mack as the special enforcer. Slated to close the show, Synergy creative director Colin West revealed that Kirk had called him 20 minutes before claiming to be stuck in traffic, subsequently unable to make it. Understandably frustrated after an evening of unfortunate circumstances, as well as Kirk escaping punishment after months of terrorizing the company, West nixed Kirk’s open contract and proceeded to fire him.

Thankfully, the ladder match between Drake Chambers and Frightmare went on as planned, as the warriors not only carried the show but also culminated their bitter feud. Multiple ladders were broken in the carnage – Chambers and Frightmare utilizing the household item as a weapon in a variety of innovative and excruciating ways. After a brutal back-and-forth battle, perhaps the most violent in Synergy history, Chambers soared off the top rope with a Swanton bomb onto Frightmare…on top of a ladder.

For fans disappointed by the shuffling of the card, Synergy plans to make it up with a historic main event at its next show in Manville, New Jersey. For the first time, a one-on-one bout between women will headline as NWA Women’s Champion Jazz goes against Northeast indie standout Maria Manic. Tickets are sure to go fast for that dream match on January 26, 2019.
