The Monster Battles The Beast

Abyss invades Synergy Pro Wrestling this Saturday.

Synergy Pro Wrestling kicks off its sophomore year this Saturday with a huge main event, something of a dream match for indie fans throughout the United States.

In his first bout since losing in the finals of the Synergy Championship tournament, KTB will collide with “The Monster” Abyss.

“In terms of name recognition and name value, it’s the one match we’ve ever booked that I felt could carry the promotion of a show,” says Synergy creative director Colin West. “So far, we’ve been right. Pre-sale tickets have been strong and interest has been good.”

According to West, Abyss hand-picked KTB as his opponent, having not wrestled him in quite some time. “That’s why we chose the roster that we have,” West says. “So when we call a guy like Abyss or Matt Striker, there are people on our roster that they want to work with. We’ve identified wrestlers who are on the cusp of something special.”

The timing couldn’t have been better – Abyss was inducted into the Impact Wrestling Hall of Fame in October. In terms of television recognition and championship accolades, the 6’8, 350-pound weapon of mass destruction is the biggest star to ever step foot in a Synergy ring. “Abyss is the right kind of guy for us,” West says. “A guy with a big character and personality who is a credible professional wrestler. He’s a pro’s pro.”

That’s only one of the marquee matches at “Black Saturday.”

Synergy Champion Matt Tremont will defend against “Retrosexual” Anthony Greene, who has been on quite a roll this year, cracking the PWI 500 and recently making his Ring of Honor debut. Although their styles couldn’t be any more different – Tremont is a deathmatch legend while Greene prides himself as the “International Fanny Pack Champion” – they have one thing in common: they’re both undefeated in the company. Something has to give this Saturday in Manville, New Jersey.

Paying homage to H20, which hosted Synergy’s one-year anniversary event in September, the company has two hardcore matches scheduled. Drake Chambers and Frightmare will culminate their year-long feud in a ladder match, although the only ways to win are by pinfall or submission. “They don’t have to climb for anything except the ability to hurt each other,” West says. “I like the idea of ladders as weapons especially for guys who take to the air.”

Another feud is spilling over from CZW. Brandon Kirk has spent months terrorizing Synergy, bloodying a ring announcer, tearing up the Thomas J. Kavanaugh VFW hall and threatening to walk out of his matches. In September, he crossed the line – smashing a plate over Louie Ramos Jr., choking the 13-year-old boy with a steel chair.

Because he has an open contract for a match of his choice against anyone at any time, he’s bulletproof against a pink slip. “I’m never going to be that guy who punishes wrestlers, but I can put them in a situation where I think they’re going to get hurt,” West says.

With his hands tied, West has had no other choice but to summon Kirk’s arch rival Jimmy Lloyd. The Tournament of Death 17 champion will bring his brand of ultraviolence to Synergy, taking on Kirk in a chairs match. That’s not all – Steve “Monsta” Mack will be the special enforcer to make sure there is a winner.

Also making his Synergy debut will be “The Icon” Magic, a veteran of the independent wrestling scene and Jersey All Pro Wrestling pioneer. The leader of Phat Boy Nation has been responsible for training several of today’s elite performers, including Impact Wrestling Tag Team Champions LAX. “Magic is one of those best-kept secret guys,” West says. “He has done for so many and asked for so little in return. I want to give him the limelight.”

It’s do or die for three competitors this Saturday: Officer Dan O’Hare returns to Synergy to meet Aaron Bradley and Sage Matthews, who had a career-defining performance at “Year One” against Joe Gacy. “I like triple threats that make no sense on paper. Inevitably, the guys in the match tend to go out of their way to prove that the match works,” West says. “Sage is in a position where you can only have so many star-making performances before you have to actually win one. O’Hare has the opportunity to avenge his previous loss. Bradley is on the worst losing streak in Synergy and I’m honestly looking very closely at that situation.”

In other action, “2 Hot” Steve Scott will face Mike Del.

On top of the star-studded lineup, WWE Hall of Famer J.J. Dillon will be on hand, thanks to Gimmick Tree Entertainment. Someone who won’t be there is Stevie Shields, a Synergy favorite who was recently accused of preying on a 14-year-old girl. As a result of the allegations, Synergy quickly responded by removing Shields from any upcoming events.

When asked if there was anything he wanted to add to the statement, West declined. “When these things happen, everybody wants to pile on and be quick to say they don’t like or condone what has happened,” West says. “That’s very fair. But there is a 14-year-old girl here, and every time we talk about it, she gets put on blast. She doesn’t deserve that. I’m not going to talk about it out of respect to her.”

Synergy Pro Wrestling’s “Black Saturday” takes place November 24 at the Thomas J. Kavanaugh VFW Post 2290 in Manville, NJ.
