Who Attacked Matt Tremont?

The former Synergy Champion is out for revenge on March 30.

While the wrestling world is fixated on finding out who killed the Invisible Man, another mystery has been left out of the spotlight, perhaps on purpose.

At Synergy “Eight” on January 26, Synergy Champion Matt Tremont was attacked by someone wearing a mask during a triple threat match that also included Frightmare and Drake Chambers. The assailant wore Matt Macintosh’s signature “Bad Apple” mask and struck Tremont in the knee with a weapon. Although referees helped the wounded champion to the back, Tremont later returned to finish the match. Despite his gutsy performance, he ultimately fell victim to Frightmare and lost the title.

Synergy management has spent the past couple months investigating who attacked the former champion. Colin West, creative director of Synergy, has revealed that based on video footage of the assault, the attacker was no taller than 6’1”. He also said that he had visual contact with MV Young and KTB as the attack happened, rendering them innocent. Obviously, Chambers and Frightmare are also innocent because they were both in the ring at the time of the attack.

That leaves five possible suspects in the Synergy locker room on the night of January 26:

Matt Macintosh

The Bad Apple swears his mask was stolen on the night of the attack, even though he wore it prior to the opening match that evening. Macintosh certainly has a reason to attack Tremont; after all, The Bulldozer eliminated Macintosh from the Synergy Pro Wrestling Championship Tournament, a tournament that Tremont would go on to win.

Jason Sinclair

Jason Sinclair fits the physical description of the assailant and The Apostles of Chaos have a history of ambushes – laying out “Retrosexual” Anthony Greene in November at “Black Saturday.” Perhaps Logan Black ordered his teammate to carry out an act of initiation?

TJ Crawford

Sure, TJ Crawford is adored by Synergy fans, but they not be aware of his recent change of heart in Pro Wrestling Explosion. Crawford used to be a member of the Beach Bums – a popular team of surfers riding a wave of momentum in the wrestling world. On January 1, though, Freddy Flamingo announced that they were splitting up to go their separate ways, by Crawford’s request. They duked it out last month at “Galactic Resolution” and Crawford emerged victorious due to nefarious means. It’s only a matter of time before he shows his true colors in Synergy.

Anthony Greene

Speaking of “Retrosexual,” the beloved competitor actually has a motive for attacking Tremont. After all, Greene was scheduled to challenge for the Synergy Championship at “Black Saturday,” but Tremont was unable to make the show due to a family emergency. Maybe Greene was still bitter about being passed over for a title shot and released his frustrations on the champion?

Mike Del

Despite seemingly turning a new leaf by shaking Steve Scott’s hand after their two-out-of-three falls match at Synergy “Eight,” The Delster remains a prime suspect. For several months, he has vented about lack of opportunity and appreciation from Synergy management. Attacking Tremont, the company’s first champion and biggest star, would send a huge message to the office, locker room and fans.

According to Synergy management, the outside doors to the locker room were locked from the inside. Unless someone managed to break in, West assumes that this was an ‘inside job’ – as in a member of the Synergy locker room on January 26, 2019, was responsible.

But let’s examine all possibilities, shall we? Maybe someone did break in. After all, it was a new building – previous Synergy shows had been held at the Thomas J. Kavanaugh VFW Post 2290 in Manville, NJ. Synergy “Eight” took place at the Polish Falcons Nest in Hillsborough Township, New Jersey. With so many people in attendance – the largest crowd in Synergy history – it’s certainly possible that someone who held a grudge against Tremont managed to infiltrate the building undetected.

Could it have been Cody Rhodes? Tremont has challenged the AEW executive on several occasions, and Cody has responded with interest. As a former NWA World Heavyweight Champion, Cody could have been tipped off about Synergy “Eight” because Jazz was defending the NWA Women’s Championship against Maria Manic. Plus, Cody still needs an opponent for AEW “Double Or Nothing.”

Speaking of Manic, she could have easily donned a mask and attacked Tremont. After honing her craft and building her reputation in Tremont’s H20 promotion over the past year, maybe the Maneater was pissed that it had taken her this long to get booked in Synergy. Surely the champion could have pulled some strings to get her a spot on the roster?

Then you have somebody who is no longer on the roster – Brandon Kirk. Even though West claims that Kirk was wrestling at another show during the time of the attack, perhaps that’s simply wishful thinking? Kirk was fired from Synergy after no-showing a chairs match at “Black Saturday,” coincidentally, the same show that Tremont missed. What better way to get back at Synergy management than attacking its champion?

Finally, here’s a longshot: Atsushi Onita. The deathmatch legend rarely travels to the United States, but he may have had some unfinished business with Tremont from their wars in the summer of 2017.

It’s anyone’s guess who donned the mask and cost Tremont the Synergy Championship, but one thing is for sure: we’ll find out who the assailant is on March 30 at Synergy “9.”
