Who is Jim Cornette? Part 2: Smoky Mountain Wrestling, WWF, OVW, and TNA

In the first part of this series, we explored Jim Cornette‘s early beginnings and his role as the manager of The Midnight Express. In Part 2, we will dive into Cornette’s work in the 1990s and 2000s, focusing on his involvement in Smoky Mountain Wrestling (SMW), World Wrestling Federation (WWF), Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW), and Total Nonstop Action (TNA) Wrestling.

Smokey Mountain Wrestling

Smoky Mountain Wrestling was a promotion founded by Cornette in 1991. It aimed to capture the old-school style of wrestling that Cornette was passionate about. As the owner, booker, and commentator of SMW, Cornette played a pivotal role in its success. He brought in a mix of talented veterans and promising young stars, showcasing his eye for talent and ability to create compelling storylines. Cornette’s work in SMW allowed him to continue his managerial role, guiding notable talents such as The Heavenly Bodies (Tom Prichard and Stan Lane) and The Rock ‘n’ Roll Express (Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson). SMW became known for its intense rivalries and engaging storytelling, drawing a loyal fanbase in the process.

Cornette Goes North – WWF and the NWA Invasion

In the mid-1990s, Cornette’s Smoky Mountain Wrestling forged a working relationship with the World Wrestling Federation (now WWE). Cornette played a key role in the NWA invasion storyline, where the NWA faction, led by Cornette, confronted and battled WWF superstars. This collaboration allowed Cornette to work with established stars and contribute to the creative direction of storylines.

Ohio Valley Wrestling

Following the closure of SMW in 1995, Cornette joined Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW), which served as a developmental territory for the WWF. Cornette took on various roles in OVW, including commentator, booker, and trainer. He played a crucial part in training and mentoring aspiring wrestlers, contributing to the development of future stars such as John Cena, Randy Orton, Brock Lesnar, and Batista.

TNA (Total Nonstop Action) Wrestling

In 2006, Cornette joined TNA Wrestling (now Impact Wrestling) as a backstage consultant, utilizing his vast experience and knowledge of the wrestling industry. He contributed to the creative direction and talent development of the promotion during his tenure. Cornette’s passion for old-school wrestling and his ability to tell compelling stories added a unique flavor to TNA’s product.
