Synergy Comes To H20 Wrestling Center

The one-year anniversary show features Matt Tremont’s first title defense.

To the victor, belong the spoils.

After becoming the inaugural Synergy Champion in July, Matt Tremont will take home field advantage in his first title defense this Saturday. The Bulldozer will host Synergy Pro Wrestling’s “Year One” anniversary show at the H20 Wrestling Center in Williamstown, New Jersey. While it will be a hero’s welcome for the champion, if he’s not careful, it could end up as the worst night of his career as he battles the sadistic luchador Frightmare.

“Frightmare is basically kicking the door in to take Tremont’s belt in Tremont’s house,” says Synergy creative director Colin West. “Only one guy besides Tremont has main evented three Synergy shows, and that’s Frightmare. They’ve both had a lot of success, dominance and vicious intentions this year.”

Grateful for Tremont holding the event in his venue, West plans on adding some H20 flavor to the traditionally family-friendly show. That’s why Jeff Cannonball will take on Logan Black with fans picking the stipulation: Dog Collar (which Frightmare defeated Drake Chambers in at “The Fight Boys”), Kitchenware (“if you can find it in the kitchen, it’s legal), or Barefoot LEGOS.

Anyone who has ever stepped on a LEGO knows all too well how painful those little toys can be. West says it’s a creative way to do hardcore wrestling, Synergy style. Although it’s the most popular choice amongst the roster, it’s up to the fans in attendance to choose which match will happen.

After all, Synergy has been built on interactive experiences and fan appreciation. Over the past 12 months, West has gauged the reactions of attendees, asking for their feedback with post-show surveys, and then implementing their suggestions in future shows. For example, a mixed tag team match took place at “Gold Standard” in July after fans wanted to see some women’s wrestling.

Now West and company are taking things to another level, streaming past matches on www.njonair.com. The pilot episode featured matches from the Synergy Championship tournament: Azrieal vs. Stevie Shields and KTB vs. Brandon Kirk. The free, half-hour shows are part of Synergy’s growth strategy, an attempt for brand exposure outside of the New Jersey area. By November, West hopes to be livestreaming events.

“If you’re not there live, you should be able to watch Synergy Pro Wrestling from your house, with your friends, from anywhere in the world, live as it’s happening,” he says. “If you want to make money in pro wrestling, you have to work harder than other people. The concept is not to drain as much money as you can out of your fans. The concept is letting more people see you so more people invest in your product. We want everybody to know who we are and give them a great product at a really fair rate.”

Another way to gain exposure is to bring in familiar faces from TV. After failing to appear at “Gold Standard” due to Shields messing up his travel plans, Matt Striker will compete at the anniversary show. The Lucha Underground and MLW Fusion commentator hand-picked his opponent: “Retrosexual” Anthony Greene. According to West, Striker said that “Anthony Greene is a great talent,” having faced him in some buzzworthy matches in New England.

“Everything is important in the grand scheme of things,” West says. “What you do at an armory show in front of 25 people matters. You better bring your best to every show because you don’t know who’s going to watch, who one of those 25 people is, who will see the footage or who knows the promoter that ran the show. You have to play hard every time, and Anthony Greene delivers every time.”

Undefeated at Synergy, Greene has been building a ton of momentum this year, impressing in the Super 8 tournament and cracking the PWI 500. “He and Stevie Shields are my Swiss Army knives,” West says. “They can do anything on the card at any time.”

Also making his Synergy debut this Saturday is Joey Gacy. The former CZW World Heavyweight Champion and current ECWA Mid-Atlantic Champion will meet Sage Matthews. In addition, “2 Hot” Steve Scott and Kit Osbourne will finally settle their differences as they go one-on-one.

Plus, there will be a fatal four way between Shields, Brandon Kirk, Drake Chambers and Joey Adams, with the winner calling their shot of any opponent and any stipulation at Synergy’s next event on November 24. “Sometimes people think of a fatal four way as management not having anything for those guys,” West says. “I hate that thought process. I don’t feel that way about any of my roster. Everybody wants a marquee match, but we can’t just do singles matches because the fans don’t want that. On paper, it’s a very good four way, so let’s give them something to fight for.”

Speaking of November 24, West will be announcing one half of the co-main event for that show this Saturday. “It’s the biggest match in Synergy history,” he teased.

Synergy Pro Wrestling’s “Year One” takes place September 22 at the H20 Wrestling Center – Monroe Business Center, Suite C., Building 1, in Williamstown, New Jersey.
