Winner Takes All At Synergy 9

Synergy Champion Frightmare faces Stand Alone Champion Joe Gacy.

Shooting on social media seems to be the hot trend these days.

Becky Lynch and Ronda Rousey started it, Eric Bischoff and Jim Cornette followed suit, and then there’s Joe Gacy, who ignited a full-blown war between two independent promotions.

On March 13, the Stand Alone Champion tweeted about the number of titles he currently possesses, and then implied that the Synergy Championship was his next target. Synergy management as well as Synergy Champion Frightmare quickly responded, and within 24 hours, a match was scheduled for “Synergy 9” this Saturday in Hillsborough, New Jersey.

Gacy will meet Frightmare in a 30-minute Iron Man match, in which both titles are on the line. It’s high stakes for both companies after a heated social media war on both Facebook and Twitter, in which Synergy creative director Colin West told Stand Alone Wrestling owner Chad Minnes to “put a leash” on his champion. Other insults included West mocking Gacy’s weight and Minnes suggesting Frightmare wears a mask in fear of ICE.

Despite having home field advantage, Frightmare may actually be the underdog in this battle because he spent most of the past two months preparing for a different challenger: “2 Hot” Steve Scott. After winning a two-out-of-three falls match against Mike Del at Synergy “8,” Scott was named the number-one contender. However, in early March, Scott announced that he was stepping away from pro wrestling for undisclosed reasons.

West took to Facebook to express his sorrow over Scott’s decision and wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors. “Steve Scott is the first wrestler I ever booked for any event (CTW 2015), and the first wrestler through the curtain in Synergy’s first match ever. I wouldn’t have had it any other way. His charisma, presence and love of wrestling will be missed,” West wrote.

Of course, a major reason that Frightmare currently holds the Synergy Championship is due to former champion Matt Tremont being attacked during a triple threat in January. A masked assailant repeatedly struck Tremont’s knee with a crowbar. Since then, Synergy management has led an investigation into who the mystery attacker was, narrowing the search down to five suspects. We’ll find out the truth at “Synergy 9” as Tremont finally confronts and fights his attacker.

Also this Saturday, both members of Team Spicy will be making their Synergy debuts: Ring of Honor’s LSG (originally scheduled to compete for Synergy in May of 2018 before that event was cancelled) takes on KTB and Women of Honor’s Gabby Ortiz faces Nyla Rose. Both men are riding a wave of momentum heading into “Synergy 9;” LSG recently won a six-way scramble at Hops & Headlocks 2 and KTB hasn’t been pinned in Synergy since losing in the finals of the championship tournament last July.

Ortiz knows how that feels, coming up short in the finals of the ECWA Super 8 Chickfight just two weeks ago. She’ll be looking for a major rebound against Rose, whose signing with AEW created headlines in February. “I get to be like, ‘I wrestled Nyla Rose before she made her AEW debut’ – I’ll be able to say that forever,” Ortiz told Corrigan’s Corner. “It’s a pretty remarkable signing. It was ballsy and I love that. Sonny (Kiss) is incredible and they signed him, too. AEW is going to be one of the major wrestling promotions. To have people like Sonny and Nyla as their top stars, that’s amazing. I mean, it should have happened already, it’s 2019. But it’s happening and they’re spearheading that. It’s really cool.”

In other action, MV Young fights for a spot on the Synergy roster as he goes one-on-one with Mike Del. Plus, Aaron Bradley, Drake Chambers and TJ Crawford will collide in a triple threat in which the winner chooses his opponent at “Synergy 10” on April 27.

“Synergy 9” takes place March 30 at the Polish Falcon’s Nest in Hillsborough, NJ.
