MLW Returns To NYC With Lucha Warfare

LA Park, Daga, El Hijo de LA Park and more will be in action.

Konnan has been juggling two wars in recent months, dragged into one and igniting the other. After Eddie Kingston encroached on LAX in Impact Wrestling, ultimately persuading original members Hernandez and Homicide to betray their leader, Konnan has followed a similar strategy in MLW.

The cagey veteran opened the eyes of Pentagon Jr. and Rey Fenix, convincing the World Tag Team Champions to rip up their contracts with Promociones Dorado and dissociate from Salina de la Renta. It was a bold move – nobody had ever dared to leave the malevolent impresario before.

But Konnan isn’t finished. He has turned his attention toward the World Heavyweight Championship, specifically, his old friend and current titleholder Low Ki. According to MLW’s public relations department, Konnan, Low Ki and Salina de la Renta exchanged words at a private MLW-beIN SPORTS corporate event. Reportedly, Konnan called out Low Ki’s strong style game, which the champion took exception to.

Things quickly escalated with Low Ki offering Konnan an open contract for a title match if the veteran could “produce a luchador with any strong style game.” K-Dawg, never one for a loss for words, took him up on the challenge. One phone call later, Konnan had recruited former AAA World Cruiserweight Champion Daga to challenge Low Ki this Thursday in New York City.

Known for his technical prowess, Daga specializes in strong style with a Mexican twist. Often finishing opponents with the rear naked choke, the current Lucha Underground Trios Champion (along with Kobra Moon and Jeremiah Snake) may be Konnan’s secret weapon.

Speaking of de la Renta, she has quickly filled positions in Promociones Dorado with equally dangerous luchadores LA Park, El Hijo de LA Park and Ricky Martinez. The legendary LA Park will take on fellow veteran PCO in a supernatural clash this Thursday at MLW Fury Road.

Meanwhile, El Hijo de LA Park will meet Salina’s former client Sammy Guevara, who she unceremoniously fired while relaxing in a Jacuzzi. “Sammy, Sammy, Sammy… still a boy trying to sit with the adults,” Salina de la Renta said in a press release.

Since the return of MLW nearly a year ago, two men have been at the epicenter of the league’s resurgence: Shane “Swerve” Strickland and “Filthy” Tom Lawlor. While Strickland won the tournament to crown a new world champion, Lawlor outlasted 39 other men in the Battle Riot to earn a world title shot at any time of his choosing. This Thursday at the Melrose Ballroom, these men will compete to determine the franchise player of MLW.

World Middleweight Champion Maxwell J. Friedman will return to the venue where he won the title, defending against former partners Jimmy Yuta and Jason Cade. Since Team TBD lost in the World Tag Team Championship finals this past June, Yuta and Cade have been at each other’s throats. It’s highly unlikely they’ll be able to co-exist in the triple threat match on Thursday, which doesn’t bode well because MJF will have Aria Blake by his side.

After resurrecting War Games earlier this month, MLW will be dusting off another WCW concept for this Thursday. Sami Callihan and Jimmy Havoc will spin the wheel and make the deal on what type of stipulation their one-on-one bout will have. The choices include dog collar, first blood, barbed wire, body bag and of course, coal miner’s glove, among other deadly options.

The Hart Foundation will come back to the Big Apple in six-man tag team action. Feeling that ACH and Rich Swann were mocking him behind his back, Teddy Hart recruited his cousin Davey Boy Smith Jr. and Brian Pillman Jr. to challenge the duo at Battle Riot in July. During the bout, Swann suffered a concussion, which many attribute to the Hart Foundation’s questionable tactics. Now they’ll all face off again, this time with 22-year-old sensation Marko Stunt joining forces with Swann and ACH.

Another family will be in attendance as former Headshrinker Samu teams with his son Lance Anoa’i. Representing the Samoan Island Tribe, which has also consisted of Mana and the late, great Umaga, the father-son pair will definitely have an advantage over their opponents: Barrington Hughes and Kotto Brazil, the newly formed Smash N Dash Connection.

Also on the card, Tommy Dreamer battles Brody King and Joey Ryan meets 2018 ECWA Super 8 Champion Richard Holliday.
