Who Will Take The Cruiserweight Crown?

Examining the 12 participants in Synergy’s tournament.

If you miss the first hour of Nitro, Synergy Pro Wrestling has you covered.

Starting this Saturday, the New Jersey-based promotion launches its cruiserweight division. The qualifications are simple: if you’re under 200 pounds, you can compete for the crown. A dozen competitors from around the Northeast – familiar faces as well as unknown names – are being brought in for the qualifying round.

“It’s about who we thought deserved the shot and less about name value,” Synergy owner Colin West told The DYWT$B Podcast. “Let’s give it to young, hungry, up-and-coming competitors.”

Here are the 12 participants:

TJ Crawford

On the heels of a brutal feud with Aaron Bradley, which included an unsanctioned fight and a Last Man Standing match which Crawford won, the Chicago native has hopefully recovered in time for yet another gut check. Consider him the favorite to win the Cruiserweight Crown.

Jason Sinclair

Another Synergy regular, Sinclair has separated from the Apostles of Chaos and is now on his own. No longer trapped in Logan Black’s shadow, it will be interesting to see how Sinclair fares.

Vinny Pacifico

Perhaps the most well-known in the tournament, Vinny Pacifico is a member of Ring of Honor’s Future of Honor division. The New York native broke into the sport in 2015, taking his first steps in the squared circle at just 15 years old. A former Warriors of Wrestling No Limits Champion, Pacifico has spent the past year honing his craft on the Northeast indie circuit, making it to the finals of the King of New York tournament. He has also been announced for this year’s Super 8.

Francis Kip Stevens

One tough nerd, Francis Kip Stevens has appeared in Synergy before as part of tag teams. Bringing some comic relief to the action, don’t sleep on this crowd-pleaser.

Charles Mason

A House of Glory standout, the Billionaire Playboy is no stranger to gold, becoming the first Suicidal Six Way Champion. Not afraid to bend the rules, he’ll be someone to keep an eye on.

Joey Silver

Honing his craft throughout the Northeast indie scene, the Delaware native possesses unlimited potential. He’s been very vocal on Twitter regarding this tournament, so we’ll see if he can back it up in the ring.

Anthony Michael

Formerly known as Michael Massacre, he was trained by Synergy favorite Eric Corvis. After taking a year off from wrestling to focus on bodybuilding, expect Anthony Michael to stay grounded rather than join the high flyers.

Randy Summers

One half of decorated tag team Milk Chocolate, Randy Summers has turned heads at Beyond Wrestling Uncharted Territory over the past year, competing against the likes of AEW stars Santana & Ortiz, Private Party and The Butcher and The Blade.

Boom Harden

Cutting his teeth at the CZW Dojo and H20 Wrestling, Boom Harden is the wildcard of the tournament. He’s young enough that we, as well as his opponents, don’t what to expect from him.

Ellis Taylor

Fresh off winning the AWE Tag Team Titles with Charlie Tiger, Ellis Taylor represents Young Dumb N Broke. West has called him Jordan Oliver’s capo and a “kind of a scumbag, but he steals shows.”

Robbie Roller

Formerly known as Zack Novack, Robbie Roller was a Beyond Wrestling original at just 16 years old. With his Muay Thai background, he’s a force to be reckoned with.

Kasey Catal

And then there was one. The only woman in the tournament is arguably the biggest badass. After all, Kasey Catal beat Jimmy Lloyd in a Squared Circle of Sacrifice deathmatch in CZW in November. With her husband Brandon Kirk lurking around, you can’t count her out.

On Jan. 18, there will be three fatal four-way matches:

Mason vs. Silver vs. Catal vs. Summers
Taylor vs. Harden vs. Michael vs. Roller
Crawford vs. Stevens vs. Pacifico vs. Sinclair

The winners will meet in a triple threat on March 28 to take home the Cruiserweight Crown.
