It’s Always Wrestling In New Jersey

An open challenge led to a string of surprises.

The card is always subject to change in pro wrestling, especially if it’s scheduled to have Joey Lynch vs. Michael Elgin.

The Modern Vintage Wrestling Heavyweight Championship match was supposed to take place back in June, but travel issues prevented Lynch from attending. Then, it was slated to happen this past Sunday at It’s Always Wrestling In New Jersey, but Impact Wrestling pulled Elgin off the show at the last minute to compete at AAA’s event in New York City.

As a result, Lynch issued an open challenge to anyone at the Colossal Sports Academy in Vorhees, NJ. To the delight of the 65 some-odd fans missing the first quarter of the Eagles game, “Retrosexual” Anthony Greene waltzed out. After a hugely successful summer, Greene was looking for another notch in his fanny pack. Then, Jordan Oliver of MLW fame intervened, insisting that he receive the title shot. Finally, CZW owner DJ Hyde strolled out to crash the party.

An action-packed fatal four-way followed, in which Lynch lived up to his “King of the Moonsault” moniker, wiping out everybody on the floor. Back inside the ring, he hit Greene with a Frankensteiner off the second rope, but “Retrosexual” landed on top of Oliver with a crossbody. Hyde rolled back into the ring, knocking down Lynch and Greene, while Oliver tried to persuade the hulking veteran to work together. The cocky 19 year old appeared successful, until he smacked Hyde from behind in a costly mistake. The dissension provided an opening for Greene and Lynch to recover, and all four men dished out their best shots. Ultimately, Lynch soared with a moonsault on top of Hyde to retain the title.

Speaking of championships, the first qualifying match for Brody Cup II featured Jimmy Lloyd, Stockade and inaugural Brody Cup winner Tommy Dreamer. As soon as the bell rang, Stockade bailed, but Dreamer and Lloyd eventually sandwiched him between flurries of fists. The teamwork was short-lived as Lloyd went for a cover and Dreamer pushed him off. Then, Dreamer went for a cover and Lloyd pushed him off. Right before they came to blows, Stockade closelined them both. Outside the ring, Stockade sidestepped a charging Lloyd, who tumbled over the guardrail and into the front row.

Back inside the ring, Dreamer pounded away, gnawed on Stockade’s head and dropped him with a Diamond Cutter, but Lloyd broke up the pin. Taking a page out of Lynch’s book, Lloyd ascended the turnbuckle for a moonsault, but crashed and burned. Dreamer followed up with a DDT for the victory, advancing to the one-night tournament in Tampa, FL, during WrestleMania Weekend.

In an unexpectedly wild brawl, two of wrestling’s hottest couples tore down the house. LSG and Gabby Ortiz went to war with Jimmy Rave and Gabby Gilbert, earning a “This Is Awesome” chant for their remarkable performance. Rave and Gilbert cut off the ring, isolating LSG and pounding away on the Ring of Honor star. When LSG finally made the hot tag to Ortiz, the former ECWA Women’s Champion exploded. After several near falls, LSG hopped to the top rope, but Gilbert crotched him, allowing Rave to hit a superplex. However, LSG rebounded by wrapping his legs around Rave and pinning his shoulders to the mat.
