SCU Come To MVW For Final Indie Date

AEW’s Daniels & Kazarian will meet EVOLVE’s Colby Corino & Joe Gacy.

Vorhees will be the worst (and last) town that SCU has ever been in for an independent wrestling event.

Two weeks before AEW debuts on TNT, Christopher Daniels and Kazarian will bid adieu to the indies this Sunday at It’s Always Wrestling In New Jersey. The duo will take on Joe Gacy and Colby Corino – members of The Unwanted in EVOLVE – in something of an inter-promotional dream match.

That’s been the booking style in Modern Vintage Wrestling over the past two years, as promoter Charlie Armstrong awaits the long-anticipated opening of the J.J. Dillon Sportatorium. “Until we can run regularly in the same venue,” Armstrong says, “instead of focusing on storylines right now, we’re focused on booking the best matches for the fans.”

Back in January at Brody Cup, Armstrong announced that the J.J. Dillon Sportatorium was scheduled to open in Philadelphia in the spring. However, ongoing zoning issues have prevented MVW from moving in to the unspecified facility. Armstrong said there is another zoning board meeting scheduled later this month. “When you try to book a building, you need to be up to date with the fire code and make sure there are plenty of parking spaces,” he says. “It takes time because we want to make sure it’s done right. If we get all the paperwork and our ducks in a row, we’ll be one step closer to opening.”

Until MVW has a permanent home, the company will continue to showcase rising talent mixed with familiar faces for one-time bouts. After travel issues prevented MVW Heavyweight Champion Joey Lynch from appearing at the company’s previous event in June, he’ll defend the title against Impact Wrestling’s Michael Elgin this Sunday. In a qualifying match for Brody Cup II, which takes place in Tampa, FL, during WrestleMania Weekend, reigning champion Tommy Dreamer will clash with old rival CW Anderson and Stockade in a triple threat. Armstrong said he offered Dreamer a bye in this year’s tournament, but the “Innovator of Violence” refused preferential treatment.

A few months after New Jack competed in MVW, his fellow ECW brethren Sabu will go one on one with inaugural MVW Heavyweight Champion Jason Kincaid. “It’s a dream match,” Armstrong says. “It’s modern versus vintage. This match defines who we are.”

Another guy riding a wave of momentum is Mick Moretti, the Australian grappler scheduled to compete in this year’s Battle of Los Angeles (BOLA). A few days before he heads to the West Coast, “The Rapscallion” will meet MVW’s best kept secret Blaxstrom. Also in action, the hottest couple in indie wrestling — LSG and Gabby Ortiz — will battle Jimmy Rave and Gabby Gilbert. “A lot of people said LSG and Jimmy Rave’s match at the last show was one of the best matches we’ve ever produced,” Armstrong says. “I have to agree. A lot of people were sleeping on that match, so we want to see it continue.”

Kicking off the event this Sunday will be a doors match between the Dawsons and Heavy Hitters. It’s a stacked lineup for your average Sunday afternoon indie event, but it has to be when you consider the competition: AAA will be running a show in New York City, Clash of Champions is streaming on the WWE Network and the NFL is back. “Don’t worry,” Armstrong says. “The Eagles don’t start until 8:30, so we should be wrapped up right as the Eagles take the field.”

It’s Always Wrestling In New Jersey takes place Sunday, September 15, at the Colossal Sports Academy in Vorhees, NJ.
