Synergy Throws Extreme Birthday Bash

Rhino and Bill Alfonso celebrated a hard-fought victory.

Synergy Pro Wrestling turned the clock back 20 years last Friday, as a couple ECW legends celebrated the company’s two-year anniversary and debut on FITE TV.

Former ECW Heavyweight Champion (and current Impact Wrestling star) Rhino came to the New Jersey-based promotion for the first time, taking on the number-one contender to the CZW World Heavyweight Championship: Brandon Kirk. The top villain during Synergy’s first year, Kirk was fired last November after missing an event, only to return at the Garden State Invitational in July. Refusing to change his devious ways, Kirk walked out and immediately made a fan cry by ripping up his homemade signs. The 70-some-odd fans in attendance (paid attendance of 110, according to Synergy owner Colin West) then roared as Rhino stormed out, pledging to make Kirk pay for his transgression.

They battled throughout the Polish Falcon’s Nest in Hillsborough, NJ, brawling into the crowd and smashing each other’s heads onto the bar and merchandise table. A thud echoed throughout the building after Rhino suplexed Kirk on the floor. Then, Rhino grabbed a slice of birthday cake and shoved it in Kirk’s face like a maniacal newlywed. Kirk returned the favor by gagging Rhino with a soft pretzel.

Back inside the ring, Rhino hit Kirk with a belly-to-belly suplex before setting up a table in the corner. Rhino charged for a Gore, but Kirk sidestepped and the Manbeast crashed through the table. Kirk wasn’t pleased with Ref Ryan T checking on his opponent, so he tossed the senior official outside the ring. That prompted whistle-blowing from another referee…Bill Alfonso!

Fonzie ran out and got in Kirk’s face, but got shoved down. ECW’s manager of champions didn’t take too kindly to that, so he grabbed a steel chair and chucked it at Kirk, who stumbled around into a Gore and a loud three count. West previously told The Wrestling Estate what the four most important matches in company history were, and the ending of this match certainly takes the cake as most exciting Synergy moment.

The pandemonium continued throughout the evening as six men battled in an elimination match to crown a number-one contender for the Synergy Championship. Jordan Oliver of MLW sent BLK Jeez out first courtesy of a school boy. Former Synergy Champion Frightmare, who had to forfeit the title due to injury in the spring, countered a suplex into a cradle and pinned Rory Gulak in the latter’s debut. In the midst of the action, Mike Del was distracted by a video of Matt Tremont announcing his return to the company at the next event on Black Friday. When Del turned around, Oliver hit his version of Ember Moon’s Eclipse for the pin. Oliver – the crowd favorite – was eliminated after MV Young nearly decapitated him with a running dropkick. Ultimately, Frightmare finished off Young with Kneecolepsy, his signature standing moonsault double knee drop – the same move that won him the title in January.

After Matt Macintosh retained the Synergy Championship in a triple threat with Logan Black and Terra Calaway later in the evening, Frightmare came out to confront his opponent on Black Friday. After their last encounter ended in a double count out in July, Macintosh challenged Frightmare to put his mask on the line. The luchador agreed and the championship match has been set for November 29.

Just like in Project X, the party ended in chaos. Bitter enemies TJ Crawford and Aaron Bradley went to war in an unsanctioned fight – no referee, no entrance music, no bell to be rung. West ripped Synergy’s banner off the ring to symbolize that the company wasn’t responsible for the carnage that would ensue. The crowd was warned to avoid both men, and that was wise advice as this brawl was anything but family-friendly. Chairs were thrown and f-bombs were dropped as they pounded each other all over the building. Bradley tried to paralyze Crawford by ripping the mat off the ring and piledriving his opponent into the unexposed wooden blanks and steel beams. Miraculously, Crawford made it back to his feet, demanding the fight continue.

The violence finally ceased after Bradley superplexed Crawford onto a pile of chairs on the unexposed canvas. Referees, EMTs and even other wrestlers ran out to check on the condition of both men. Bradley was unresponsive, so Crawford was declared the winner, but West admonished the ring announcer for the decision because in reality, neither man emerged unscathed.
