What To Expect At “Double or Nothing”

Perhaps there will be a stipulation for Chris Jericho vs. Kenny Omega?

Pool party in February? Why not? The Elite have never been shy about trying new and bold things. If they announce it, we will show up.

From what we saw at the pool party, we can already count on “Double or Nothing” being a blockbuster show. A few matches were teased and yes, it was finally revealed that Kenny Omega is the executive vice president, or at least one of them. With tickets now sold out and the party over, all that is left is us clinging onto AEW’s every move in anticipation of what is to come.

As we wait for more matches to be announced, there is nothing more fun than to speculate on what could be. One of the biggest things this show needs to do is create stars. The Elite have one of the biggest stars of all, and no, it’s not former free agent Omega; it’s Hangman Page. Page has always seemed like a background player in The Elite, usually jumping in to save his buddies. If you look at Page, he has “world champion” written all over him. His looks, size and move set say it all, but as far as having a standout or breakthrough match, he comes up short.

That changes at “Double or Nothing” when he enters the ring against the Bastard PAC. The former Neville is probably one of the most skilled and versatile wrestlers that Hangman has ever faced, which is why he is going to take him to another level. This match could steal the entire show. We have had this picture painted of Page being the guy who can’t get the job done. Meanwhile, PAC is already known as a decorated champion and he will wipe the floor with you if you aren’t prepared. With the proper amount of time in the ring, these guys will tear the house down – the coal that is Hangman should come out not only a new diamond, but a new “Open the Dream Gate” Champion.

While PAC and Page’s futures are clear, that isn’t the case for all AEW talent. That being said, I’ve got to believe a salt of the earth guy like MJF will find his way on the card. After all, he is everything that is right about being a heel. The timing this young man has is well beyond his years. His future in AEW is becoming the biggest heel that they have. Right now he is like most wrestlers right now, waiting to find his spot on the card.

The most interesting question when it comes to MJF is if his true colors will show on May 25, or will he continue to play The Elite? Being the old-school heel that he is, I fully expect him to be involved in either Hangman’s match or The Young Bucks’ match. Neither of these matches needs a screwy finish, but MJF will come into play. My bet is he sticks to his heel tactics, helping The Young Bucks defeat the Lucha Bros in a manner that the former do not approve of.

The signing of MJF has proven to be a very beneficial move. With that being said, he is no Kenny Omega. AEW’s hottest new star has already landed firmly between Jericho’s cross hairs once more. The match that will most likely be the main event of the show puts “The Best in the World” against “The Best Bout Machine.” Everyone knows these two will put on a good, quality match, but there are two things to look at here: Omega has been on record many times as saying he doesn’t enjoy doing the same match over or at least the same match in a short amount of time. Jericho is of a similar mindset, reinventing himself almost every time he comes onto the screen. With that in mind, be prepared for the match to have some type of stipulation attached to it. This will allow both wrestlers to tell a new story in their rivalry, ensuring that the fans do not go stale on the main event.

The second thing to look out for is after the main event, and the boldest prediction I have for “Double or Nothing.” Omega goes to send the fans home happy with his signature “Goodbye and Goodnight,” but before he can finish, he will be interrupted by the newest signee – Dean Ambrose. The stars are aligning for this move, with Ambrose set to be done with WWE in April. The Lunatic Fringe is said to have turned down a very lucrative contract made by WWE. Frustrated from all the nonsense over the years and the poor follow-up on his heel turn, it’s easy to see why Ambrose would leave WWE for AEW. Plus, he lives in Las Vegas, where “Double or Nothing” is being held.

Don’t expect Dean to ruin the main event, but a post-match attack on Omega with a killer promo to follow could be in store for us. This will give Ambrose a platform to go back to the Jon Moxely character many of us fell in love with. The real winners of this scenario would be the fans getting a huge match from the former ironman of WWE versus a man who brought NJPW to another level. Both men are technically sound in the ring and a Moxely and Omega promo battle would be one for the ages.

The Elite know they have to knock this show out of the park, and with these moves, they will have no problem doing just that.
