Who Will End Cody’s TNT Championship Reign?

Five challengers who could dethrone Cody.

Defending your championship every week is a great way to showcase the title and the talent competing for it, but it’s also a great way to end your reign early. Cody has followed John Cena’s U.S. Title open challenge by putting his TNT Championship on the line every week on AEW Dynamite. So far, he has been successful against Jungle Boy, Marq Quen and the debuting Ricky Starks, all who have had strong outings against the champion. Cody is riding high right now, but all things must come to an end.

The first man that comes to mind is MJF. After denying Cody future AEW World Title shots, humiliating him for weeks (still can’t get over that whipping) and then beating him in the middle of the ring, MJF is the perfect challenger. However, it’s simply not in MJF’s nature to answer a challenge. He’ll want this opportunity handed to him on a silver platter, and honestly, his track record proves he deserves it. He’s the holder of the Diamond Dozen ring, he’s been undefeated for months, and most importantly, he’s got one up on the champion.

Cody has stated that he is willing to accept challengers from different promotions if they are willing to work with AEW. Keeping COVID-19 in mind and other promotions being willing to do this, someone I would love to see answer the challenge is Flip Gordon. They’ve had very entertaining segments on Being The Elite, so getting to see that on TNT could do wonders for Gordon’s career. Flip also is very close to new AEW signee Brian Cage and former Elite member Marty Scurll. Now known as the Mercenary, wouldn’t it be fitting for Gordon to get the last laugh on Cody by taking his precious title?

Staying with guys not officially on the AEW roster, Jeff Cobb would be a great talent to step up. Cobb already made a huge impact on AEW when he was hired by Jericho to take out Mox. Now Cobb could go into business for himself, bringing a hard-hitting style that Cody hasn’t endured before. Without Cody’s ability to get charged up, Cobb would have a great chance to keep his destruction streak alive in AEW.

Back to the actual AEW roster, Shawn Spears is waiting for his big break. Since leaving WWE for greener pastures, he hasn’t exactly set the world on fire, Cody referred to him as a “good hand,” well so far, Spears has been a decent hand at best. With Tully Blanchard in his corner, Spears should be rushing to get back at Cody after he was defeated at AEW All Out.

The final wrestler I would love to see answer Cody’s open challenge is not only the coolest man in wrestling, but probably the coolest man alive…period. Orange Cassidy, the king of sloth style, challenging the American Nightmare: it doesn’t get any better than that. Even those who dislike Cassidy can’t deny the reaction he gets every time he slowly appears on our TV screens. Cassidy can flat out go, as evidenced by his incredible match with PAC at AEW Revolution. Here’s hoping that the TNT Championship gets freshly squeezed at the end of this open challenge.
