Cult Of Fantasy Booking: CM Punk Dream Matches

Five opponents for CM Punk’s eventual comeback.

A popular theory for the Royal Rumble (that even our Editor-in-Chief subscribed to) was that Brock Lesnar would run roughshod over 28 WWE Superstars until No. 30. Then, we would be graced with the guitar riffs that begin “Cult of Personality.” Alas, Drew McIntrye claymore kicked Lesnar out of the building with half of the match remaining and those hopes were dead.

Now, if CM Punk were to come back, I would prefer that he not wrestle Brock Lesnar. Of course, if my choices were that or nothing, then any Punk is better than no Punk.

Despite a return this year being unlikely now, the seeds have already been planted. Even though the former WWE Champion is employed by FOX, he still appears on a WWE program on a regular basis. Forget all the bad blood from 2014-2015, everybody comes back to WWE, especially when there’s money to be made.

And Punk stepping back in the squared circle is a license to print money.

Who would I want to see Punk wrestle most? I know most of you are thinking the same thing. Well, you’re in luck! Here are the CM Punk dream matches for his eventual return to the ring.

AJ Styles

Clearly, the tension is already there as evidenced by the shade they’ve thrown back and forth recently. If you don’t want to see this, I have to question if you’re a real wrestling fan. Even though both athletes are much older than their Ring of Honor/TNA days, this match would be unbelievable. WWE could bill it as a dream match and nobody would complain.

Kevin Owens

KO is being really underutilized right now. I assume we eventually get him and Seth at WrestleMania, but think of the program that Owens and Punk would put on. Both are great at being heel or face, so it would make for an interesting story.

Seth Rollins/Daniel Bryan

This is sort of a cop out answer, but hear me out. I was going to leave out both Rollins and Bryan because Punk has wrestled them before. However, that was pre-Yes! Movement and before Rollins’ meteoric rise. Also, if you don’t want to see either of these matches, you are either an imbecile or a hater.

Johnny Gargano

If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a thousand times: Gargano is the best wrestler going today. The guy just puts on classic after classic. A bout with Punk would be no different. This is the least likely choice to actually happen because there is no way that Vince McMahon would give that kind of clout to an NXT star like Gargano.

Adam Cole

ADAM COLE BAY BAY! Despite what John Corrigan says, Cole just has the “it” factor. This program would be electric. Imagine Punk coming to challenge for the NXT Title instead of the Universal or WWE Championships? That would give an incredible boost to the black and yellow brand. Again, highly unlikely to happen, but a man can dream.

I know that I’ve left out numerous great choices, but the talent pool is deep. I stand by my picks for CM Punk dream matches.

  1. A nice little piece. I couldn’t agree more re: Gargano. Tremendous performer.!! The thought of Punk coming to challenge Cole for the NXT title is too cool for WWE. Let’s face it.
