National Pro Wrestling Day In Philly

CHIKARA & Wrestling is Fun host a free show.

The best holiday in February isn’t Valentine’s Day or Groundhog Day.

It’s not even Fat Tuesday.

Ladies and gentlemen, children of all ages, the greatest holiday on the Road to WrestleMania is National Pro Wrestling Day. Why? Because it’s free!

The eighth annual event takes place this Saturday at the Wrestle Factory in Philadelphia. CHIKARA partners with Wrestling is Fun to host the family-friendly affair for a good cause.

“The objective was to make a difference in the world using the collective power that professional wrestling possesses,” says K. Potasio of Wrestling is Fun. “Like-minded wrestlers came together to donate their time and effort to coordinate a day of wrestling to give back to the fans in hopes of generating donations to impactful charities.”

Since 2013, National Pro Wrestling Day has raised thousands of dollars for a number of causes, including charities that provide netting in countries facing mosquito-spread viruses, medical procedures for people with sensory impairments, mental health facilities and more.

This year, the event will benefit Cradles to Crayons, which provides children through age 12 living in homeless or low-income situations with the essential items they need to thrive. Fans coming to the Wrestle Factory are encouraged to donate financially or bring warm winter clothing for children in Philadelphia.

Originally, National Pro Wrestling Day featured matches from 26 indie promotions across the United States. Coordinating all of that became a logistical nightmare, so CHIKARA has carried on the event as a fundraiser for different charities. “It is meant to spread goodwill for the world of pro wrestling at large,” Bryce Remsburg, senior official at CHIKARA and current AEW referee, told The Wrestling Estate.

The inaugural event took place at the Pennsylvania National Guard Armory and kicked off with the Briscoes defending the Ring of Honor Tag Team Championship against Steve Corino and Jimmy Jacobs. 2 Cold Scorpio and Tommy Dreamer were among the notable names on the card, as various promotions such as EVOLVE, Women Superstars Uncensored and the International Wrestling Cartel were represented during the night show.

In the main event, Colt Cabana defeated CHIKARA founder Mike Quackenbush in a highly entertaining showcase. Eight years later, Quackenbush headlines National Pro Wrestling Day yet again, this time culminating his 25th anniversary tour. He’s handpicked CHIKARA pioneer Hallowicked as his opponent in what is sure to be an emotional encounter.

Also announced thus far is a trios match between Forged and The Crucible, The Legion of Rot clashing with The Colony, Ophidian taking on Still Life and Dan Champion battling Callux the Castigator.

“Champion is having a breakout year and is facing the largest and most savage wrestler we could find him,” Potasio says. “Fans can expect a fun event, a full afternoon of matches, lots of surprises, a family friendly environment and an experience that can best be observed live and in person.”

National Pro Wrestling Day takes place at The Wrestle Factory in Philadelphia on Feb. 8 at 3 p.m. EST.
