Ricky Reyes Enters ECWA Super 8

The 24th annual tournament takes place April 18 in New Castle, DE.

The Wrestling Estate has learned the next name slated for the 24th annual ECWA Super 8.

Ricky Reyes is scheduled for the one-night tournament on April 18 at the Asbury United Methodist Church in New Castle, DE. This will be the first Super 8 organized under Joe Zanolle, who took over the promotion in December.

“Ricky Reyes was part of a great tag team in the early 2000s with Rocky Romero, known as the Havana Pitbulls,” Zanolle says. “Both competed in the 2004 ECWA Super 8 Tournament and showed the ECWA fans that they were great singles competitors as well. Since that time, Reyes has traveled the world making a name for himself. Sixteen years later he returns to ECWA as a true veteran and looks to capture what eluded him in 2004: the prestigious ECWA Super 8 trophy.”

The 20-year veteran has experience in the tournament – he lost to Mike Kruel in the first round back in 2004. Throughout his decorated career, Reyes has collected gold in promotions across the United States. Most notably, he and Rocky Romero (as the Havana Pitbulls) defeated CM Punk and Colt Cabana for the Ring of Honor Tag Team Titles. In recent years, he’s gained notoriety as Cortez Castro on Lucha Underground. The current OutBreak Champion, Reyes has returned to ECWA in 2020 to re-establish his dominance.

“If I’m in it, I’ll win it,” Reyes told The Wrestling Estate.

The Wrestling Estate previously broke the news that Vinny Pacifico was the first name announced for this year’s Super 8.

For almost a quarter century, the ECWA Super 8 Tournament has become a launching pad for undiscovered, up-and-coming talents to get noticed throughout the industry. Previous winners include former NXT Champion Tommaso Ciampa, former MLW World Heavyweight Champion Low Ki, former ROH World Champion Christopher Daniels, seven-time WWE Tag Team Champion Xavier Woods and many other notable names. In recent years, the Super 8 has propelled participants into MLW. Richard Holliday won the 2018 tourney and the Von Erichs competed in last year’s Legacy tourney, which featured all second and third-generation wrestler.

Even if you don’t take home the trophy, an impressive showing in the tournament can raise your stock. Look no further than Ty Awesome, whose breakout performance in the 2018 edition led him to the ECWA Heavyweight Championship.

The 24th Annual Super 8 takes place Saturday, April 18, at the Asbury United Methodist Church in New Castle, DE.
