What Happened to Alberto El Patron?

Last seen at the Redemption press conference, El Patron has since been fired from Impact Wrestling.

Around 4:30 p.m. CST last Friday, Alberto El Patron sashayed through the hallway of the Royal St. Charles Hotel in New Orleans, entering a press conference for Impact Wrestling’s Redemption pay-per-view.

Less than 24 hours later, the company announced that it had terminated its agreement with Patron, stemming from his no-show at the joint Impact/Lucha Underground event on Friday evening.

Anything can happen in professional wrestling, but no one is sure what exactly did happen.

We were looking for answers during this week’s Impact Wrestling teleconference with Austin Aries, the man El Patron was set to challenge at Redemption. According to the Impact World Champion, the last time he had seen El Patron was at their scuffle during the press conference.

“I don’t normally see Alberto a lot once the event starts because he may go off into his own area, and with him being the professional that he is, I wasn’t concerned,” Aries said. “But as the event was going, I did inquire if anyone had seen him or where his location was. That’s when I realized he hadn’t arrived yet.”

The scheduled tag team main event was subsequently changed to a triple threat between Aries, Fenix and Pentagon DARK, which the latter won by pinning his fellow Lucha Underground star. That victory also prompted Impact to change gears and grant both men a title shot in the new main event of Redemption on April 22.

“I’m extremely disappointed that I won’t get in there with Alberto,” Aries said. “But, moving forward, I’m really excited for this whole different match up. It’s going to be a lot faster paced, more exciting and more unpredictable when you add a third element in there. Maybe it will be even better than what was going to happen.”

Now the press conference was streamed live on Twitch, but it’s highly unlikely Impact will air it on TV or in future broadcasts. Luckily, The Wrestling Estate was on hand to witness the epic confrontation that is quite ironic in hindsight.

El Patron started the verbal tirade by claiming Aries was forced to return to Impact Wrestling, alluding to WWE releasing the cruiserweight in July of 2017. He followed that up by accusing Aries of preferring to stay in McMahonland.

“You are the one that left to go to the other side,” El Patron said. “I left that company because that company wasn’t good enough for El Patron. I want to be here. This is my company. What did you do over there? They kick your ass in NXT every single night?”

Aries responded by reflecting on the past year and how he has adapted to life’s challenges, collecting titles in just about every promotion he has since appeared in. “You can insult me and talk about the things I didn’t accomplish there, but I left there with my pride, I left there with my dignity,” Aries said. “These are things that you probably don’t know much about, so you took your mask off to go be a B-level main eventer in that company you talk so kindly about.”

As tensions heated like a fresh cup of gumbo, El Patron tossed water into Aries’ face. Aries then tossed a banana back, and then they grappled into the audience, knocking Sonjay Dutt down in the process.

El Patron stormed off, never to be seen again.

It’s not like he’s a missing person – Patron has tweeted since the controversy went down. Until he speaks out, we may never get the full story.

But the wrestling world, especially those in that hotel, will forever wonder who would have been the better man.
