Ten Pounds Of Gold Returns To Brooklyn

Catalyst Wrestling welcomes NWA World Heavyweight Champion Trevor Murdoch.

History will be made on Jan. 15, as the Ten Pounds of Gold comes to Brooklyn, New York for the first time in 60 years.

NWA World Heavyweight Champion Trevor Murdoch teams with Homicide to take on Wrecking Ball Legursky and Colby Corino, the son of former NWA World Heavyweight Champion Steve Corino.

“As someone who was born and raised in Brooklyn and a lifelong wrestling fan, the opportunity to make this happen is amazing,” Matthew Ryan, executive producer and head of day-to-day operations at Catalyst Wrestling, told The Wrestling Estate. “I can’t wait to see what happens on January 15th as Trevor Murdoch joins legends such as Thesz and Rogers as those who have brought our industry’s most prestigious title to the borough.”

The earliest report of the Ten Pounds of Gold being defended in Brooklyn is traced back to 1952 with then-champion Lou Thesz, according to author and historian Tim Hornbaker, who has written extensively about the National Wrestling Alliance, the history of pro wrestling in New York City and former NWA Worlds Heavyweight Champion Buddy Rogers. The original “Nature Boy,” who took the crown from Pat O’Connor in June of 1961, made one of his earliest defenses of the title in Brooklyn just under two months later against trailblazing star Sweet Daddy Siki.

Rogers’ last known defense of the 10 Pounds of Gold would come on October 2, 1961, as he would face Bruno Sammartino, the man who’d take the World Wide Wrestling Federation Championship from him a year later inside Madison Square Garden.

In 2017, Ryan and a team of investors launched Capitol Wrestling, incorporating modern storytelling into the traditional DIY identity of independent wrestling. He and his co-creative director Ashe Samuels credit the pandemic with fueling their creativity, developing the concept of Si Dao, in which matches have been taking place on the island Antonio Inoki and Masa Saito had their Island Death Match in 1987.

In April 2020, the New York-based company rebranded to Catalyst Wrestling, having grown from a regional promotion to an internationally syndicated property airing on Fight Network’s U.K., U.S. and Canada platforms, as well as FITE and GaS Digital.

Since then, the promotion has blended “best of” episodes highlighting characters, rivalries and moments with original matches filmed on empty sets. The matches are hyped the week before and then built up with promos and montages. It’s been a winning formula during the pandemic with the best part being each episode runs under 30 minutes. Consider them palette cleansers amongst the gluttony of wrestling available in 2021.

Catalyst Wrestling welcomed fans back in September with “Steal This Show,” a TV/iPPV taping from Cathedral Arts Live in Jersey City, NJ.

At this next event in Brooklyn, current Ring of Honor Pure Champion Josh Woods will also be in action, challenging Catalyst Champion Mr. Darius Carter.

Catalyst Wrestling Presents Ewing takes place Jan. 15 at The Muse in Brooklyn, NY.
