Megan Bayne Wins ECWA Women’s Super 8

Bow down to the Greek goddess.

Megan Bayne strode into the 2021 ECWA Women’s Super 8, forcing the competition to bow down.

The Greek goddess wasn’t even scheduled for the tournament until six days ago, when she was announced as the replacement for the injured Kaia McKenna. Most of the 70 some-odd fans inside the Monster Factory didn’t even know who the 5’11 amazon was, comparing her to Xena, Wonder Woman and even Rita Repulsa. One thing everyone could agree on, though, is that Megan Bayne is destined to be a star.

A student of Damian Adams, she’s been wrestling for only four years (technically three, if you factor in the layoff from COVID-19). Success has come quickly – she won the OVW Women’s Championship in the summer of 2019. Emerging from the pandemic as “Megasus,” the dominant deity has become a force to be reckoned with on the independent scene, piling up victories in Women’s Wrestling Revolution Plus and Northeast Wrestling. She’s also had a taste of the big time, competing on AEW Dark against the likes of Thunder Rosa and Nyla Rose.

Kicking off the tourney, Megan Bayne overpowered Damaris Dawkins, impressing both the New Jersey crowd and all those watching along on IWTV. In the semifinals, she dismantled Gabby Ortiz, former ECWA Women’s Champion and the odds-on favorite who went to the finals in 2019. Victory in the finals wasn’t certain, though, as she’d meet a fellow member of Team Adams: Ashley D’Amboise.

Boasting a similar physique, D’Amboise seemed to be the only competitor in the tournament who could match Bayne’s strength. They exchanged shoulder tackles and leapfrogs, and during a crisscross, D’Amboise got the better of Bayne with a crossbody. But even though they’ve sat under the same learning tree, D’Amboise is only a few months into her career. She’s prone to make rookie mistakes, which is exactly what happened when she tried another crossbody, only to be snatched and crunched.

Bayne continued the assault, suplexing her fellow trainee and driving a knee between her shoulder blades. With the crowd rallying behind her, D’Amboise wiggled out of a Samoan Drop and hit a running neck breaker, which put away her previous opponent Tina San Antonio. That wasn’t enough to keep “Megasus” down, though. Bouncing off the ropes again, D’Amboise got caught in Bayne’s version of the Black Hole Slam and was pinned.

A virtual unknown at the start (especially compared to fan favorite Erica Leigh), Bayne earned the crowd’s respect by the end of the show. As the other women came out to congratulate the winner per Super 8 tradition, Bayne took the mic: “I’d just like to say that every one of these women were phenomenal tonight. However, the gold always goes home with the goddess. So, better luck next time.”

Bringing the trophy home to Athens, Megan Bayne is sure to rack up more titles and accolades as her career progresses. It’s only a matter of time before she joins previous winners like Tessa Blanchard, Deonna Purrazzo and Quinn McKay on TV. Until then, we plebeians should be grateful to have basked in her divine presence.
