Speculation Grows Over Lesnar’s WWE Return

When will “The Beast” come back?

Brock Lesnar has transcended both pro wrestling and MMA, becoming one of combat sports’ biggest crossover stars. He hasn’t set foot in a WWE ring since WrestleMania 36 when he lost the world title to Scottish wrestler Drew McIntyre, but rumors persist that “The Beast Incarnate” will be back in action sooner rather than later.

Lesnar doing the honors at The Showcase of the Immortals last year set him up for a main event run on the Raw brand. This has seen the 2020 Royal Rumble winner go on to feud with the likes of Seth Rollins, former tag team partner Dolph Ziggler, Randy Orton, The Miz, Goldberg, and Bobby Lashley over the WWE Championship.

McIntyre’s program with “The All Mighty” ended this summer when he lost a Last Chance opportunity inside Hell in a Cell. That leaves a new challenger for Lashley, and who better than Lesnar? The WWE’s main roster has already been shaken up by releases and budget cuts.

Notable departures from the promotion include former Universal champ Braun Strowman, while Samoa Joe was let go only to be rehired and return to the NXT brand. It leaves a lack of depth at the top of the card, particularly on Raw, and a return for Lesnar could help to fill that somewhat.

Any comeback to WWE will almost certainly be as before, with him wrestling on a part-time basis. Lesnar, who turns 44 this July, does not enjoy the travel schedule and it’s hard to see him going back on the road permanently. It is clear that he has always been prepared to return.

It looked as though he had competed in the UFC for the last time in 2011 when he lost to Alistair Overeem, but Lesnar would step back inside the octagon five years later and face Mark Hunt. Another return to MMA and facing Jon Jones was mooted in 2020, but nothing materialized.

Jones, a former UFC Light Heavyweight champ, has since vacated the title and wants to move up to Heavyweight and challenge Francis Ngannou. Lesnar’s one-time potential opponent is the leading sites’ favorite on bonusfinder.com in the MMA odds for this prospective bout over the promotion’s premier title. In order to shake things up, WWE may hold its annual Draft that ensures Raw and SmackDown brands don’t become stale and short on matches we haven’t seen before. The upcoming Money in the Bank event also gives the winners of men’s and women’s ladder matches a guaranteed world title opportunity anytime, anyplace for up to one year.

Holding off on a Lesnar comeback until a stadium show like SummerSlam is another option. He has already won Money in the Bank in a surprise fashion before, so WWE would be repeating events of the past and lacking creativity by going down that route again. He is a proven pay-per-view draw that will help shift tickets for fans in attendance, as well as help the company at the box office.
