Gabby Ortiz Enters Women’s Super 8

ECWA’s one-night tournament takes place July 31.

The Wrestling Estate has learned the first name slated for the 2021 ECWA Women’s Super 8.

Gabby Ortiz is scheduled for the one-night tournament on July 31 at The Monster Factory in Paulsboro, NJ.

The Philadelphia native went the distance at the last ECWA Women’s Super 8 in 2019, defeating Gemma Cross and Scarlett Bordeaux before succumbing to Quinn McKay in the finals. As part of the tournament, Ortiz also won the now-defunct ECWA Women’s Championship before losing it to McKay. Since that time, she’s held the Monster Factory Pro Wrestling (MFPW) Girls’ Championship for over a year.

“I’m eager to compete in the Women’s Super 8 once again,” Gabby Ortiz told The Wrestling Estate. “I was so close to victory in the last tournament, so I have an undeniable hunger to take it all the way in this year’s event.”

The ECWA Women’s Super 8 (originally called the Super 8 ChickFight) began in 2014 as an extension of the historic Super 8, the longest-running pro wrestling tournament in the United States. Similar to the men’s version, the women’s tournament has become a launching pad for undiscovered, up-and-coming talents to get noticed throughout the industry. Tessa Blanchard, the first winner, and Deonna Purrazzo, the only back-to-back winner, have gone on to Impact Wrestling, and McKay has been signed by Ring of Honor. Previous participants have included Britt Baker, Kiera Hogan, Maria Manic, Santana Garrett, among other notable names.

“We missed 2018 and 2020 with COVID, but we are back on track for the sixth edition,” says ECWA owner Joe Zanolle. “We just celebrated the 25th edition for the men and we are looking forward to building that long legacy with the women. Look at the talent of the first five Women’s Super 8s. That is the quality and young talent you will see this year. We are so glad to showcase these women competitors who work just as hard as the men. And you will not be seeing Divas, but trained and skilled professional wrestlers and athletes.”

The commentary team for this year’s ECWA Women’s Super 8 will be Brady Hicks and A Very Good Professional Wrestler, winner of the 2020 Super 8. The event will stream live on IWTV and a limited number of tickets are available now.
