5 More Last Dance Wrestling Documentaries

If you thought WWE did a great job with documentaries before, the game has changed.

Now that The Last Dance has reached its climax, fans are already wondering what’s next. Dwayne Wade has said that a documentary about the 2008 Olympics basketball team is already in the works, but imagine the potential of pro wrestling documentaries in this format. WWE has dabbled in this style with The Last Ride documentary, but there are plenty more interesting topics. Even AEW could get in the fun.

After the interest in my previous wishlist for wrestling documentaries, here are five more I’d love to see.

John Cena

If the curtain hasn’t already closed on John Cena’s career, then what better way to finish than one last feud and a brilliant miniseries. The 16-time champ has experienced one of the most tumultuous in-ring careers since Hulk Hogan. He has gone from beloved to hated and now respected for his dedication to carrying WWE for over a decade. He’s also had his fair share of controversy, having gone through multiple public breakups and being accused of holding down several fellow wrestlers.

Rey Mysterio

As rumors are currently running rampant on what the future holds for the former world champion, a career retrospective is needed for the most popular luchador of the past quarter century. He could give his unfiltered thoughts on taking off the mask in WCW and his plagued World Heavyweight Championship run in WWE. So much time has passed since any interview for a DVD release, so there’s plenty of fresh material for the soft-spoken underdog to speak on.

Drew McIntyre

Now that Drew McIntyre has reached the top of WWE, there’s probably a full-blown documentary in the works. Finding old footage of his days in developmental shouldn’t be hard, plus WWE has become open to using footage from other companies so we could see Drew’s road back to WWE that went through Impact, WCPW and other independent promotions. He’s truly a success story and an inspiration to the many released during the coronavirus pandemic.

AEW: Year 1

AEW has done a great job producing out-of-the-ring content, whether it’s the “Road to…” series, Being The Elite or just short clips of backstage antics. As the promotion reaches its one-year anniversary, one would hope that a documentary is in the works. Twitter would buzz over The Dark Order’s thoughts on the fans’ backlash, Brandi’s stable being canceled and the entire roster’s reaction to Jim Cornette’s frequent criticism.

Bret Hart

If there was ever a wrestling documentary that should have a sequel, it’s Wrestling with Shadows. The documentary follows Bret Hart in his final year with WWE. Although the film crew had backstage access, there’s still some kayfabe elements. In a multi-episode series, you can cover all bases from Bret’s disastrous WCW run to Owen’s tragic death to Bret’s career-ending concussion to suffering a stroke to his shocking return to WWE and beyond. Bret certainly hasn’t been shy in front of the camera in recent years, so he’d happily open up without fear of burning any bridges in McMahonland.
