5 Edge Dream Matches We Need

After Randy Orton, who’s next for the Rated-R Superstar?

We can all agree that the past few Royal Rumbles have fallen very flat; however, that was not the case this year.

Watching the first half where Brock Lesnar tossed everyone out like you do on WWE2K on easy made it feel like we were being set-up for another flat ending. Thankfully, Drew McIntyre kicked The Beast out of the ring and won the Rumble. While that moment was big, it was nothing compared to the 21st entrant. After nine long years away from the squared circle, Edge made his shocking return to a WWE ring. He speared everyone in sight and racked up three eliminations before being eliminated himself. While the moment was special, it left all of us wanting more.

Now we look at five dream matches Edge must have.

Let’s start with the man that eliminated Edge: Roman Reigns. Whether you love the former Shield member or hate him, there is no denying that he is the guy. Roman did some of his best promo work when he was pitted against John Cena, who pulled something out of the Big Dog that we had never seen before. Edge can do the same. Edge understands how to build a feud and isn’t afraid of backstage punishment for going after Roman, which makes for great television. Edge can bring back that mean streak in Roman, subsequently producing a very hard-hitting match. This can also really test how Edge is health wise. After all, we need to know who has the better spear.

Edge also needs to face a King. No, not King Corbin – the King of Strong Style! Some may say WWE missed the mark with Shinsuke Nakamura, and to a degree they are right, but Nakamura is still a two-time NXT Champion, a Royal Rumble winner and former Intercontinental Champion. Having him face off against the Rated-R Superstar would be an instant way to bring Nakamura back to the limelight. What these two would do in the ring would be pure magic; Edge can match Nakamura technically with no problem and their finishers can both be delivered in a moment’s notice.

Edge isn’t limited to just hard-hitting and technically sound matches. His feud with the Undertaker saw him go to a much darker place. Well, Edge might need that same type of darkness if he ends up on The Fiend’s radar. Edge has never seen anything like him, and it would be interesting to see if he lets him in. Imagine Edge’s name brought up by the happy-go-lucky Bray Wyatt on a fun episode of the Firefly Funhouse, and then immediately targeted by The Fiend. The two never squared off (unless you count a brief appearance on the E & C Show) and the psychological warfare would be unmatched by anything else going on in wrestling today. This also could be a great way to get the title back on Edge before he rides off into the sunset. The Fiend hasn’t had anyone even come close to removing him from power, but if one man can do it, it’s the Rated-R Superstar. The ultimate opportunist would be sure to find a weakness in The Fiend.

Speaking of wars, AEW is currently besting NXT on a regular basis, so how does Triple H get eyes back on the product and swing the Wednesday Night War? By pairing Edge against Tommaso Ciampa. He never lost the NXT Championship and will soon hold Goldie once again. His love for the NXT Title can only be matched by how much Edge loved the World Heavyweight Title. No matter what champion was performing, if Edge was on the show, his title always felt like it was the No. 1 title. The same can be said about Tommaso. It didn’t matter what was happening on the main roster, when Ciampa showed up, the NXT title felt like the biggest title in WWE.

This speaks to the work ethic of both men priding themselves in being the best on the show. A month or two-long feud featuring Edge chasing Tommaso’s NXT Championship would definitely swing the momentum back in NXT’s favor. Another reason I would love to see these two work together is the knowledge Edge could pass on to Ciampa. They’ve both dealt with neck injuries and Edge could teach Ciampa how to tone down his in-ring style while still pleasing the crowd. Here’s to hoping Edge wanders down to the yellow brand and finds “The Blackheart of NXT” waiting on him.

The last dream match with a returning Edge is one that is a bit more personal. In early 2012, barely a year into retirement, Edge returned with short hair and no wrestling tights to confront John Cena. Edge delivered what was one of the most heartfelt promos ever, demanding Cena wake up, wake up, wake up John, and slay The Beast. Edge told Cena to do it for all of those who couldn’t do it, who had to watch Brock leave WWE and abandon his fans. Fast-forward to today, and Lesnar still has a stranglehold on the WWE World Title. The only difference is now the Rated-R Superstar has been cleared and has the power to do something about it.

Fans are over the Brock Lesnar model. While he gives us fun moments here and there, the world title should be showcased. Challengers should feel like they have a real chance to compete, not get squashed. With Edge back, his most passionate feud will be against Lesnar. Having to be on the sideline for almost a full decade and watch Brock get away with everything had to burn Edge from the inside. While the size difference is there, Edge isn’t like anyone else Brock has ever gone against. He is cold, calculated and strikes only when necessary. He won’t rush in and let Brock destroy him. He is going to make Brock work for everything in the match, and with one massive spear, slay The Beast for good.
