Lucha Brutal Breaks Through Competitive Texas Market

Live report from Sam Gladen.

With the success of Lucha Underground and MLW in recent years, it’s a wise move for new promotions to continue targeting the Hispanic market. That’s where Lucha Brutal comes in – a new Dallas-based promotion and the brainchild of owner/promoter Rogelio Martinez.

The startup merges the American independent wrestling style with the traditions and flair of lucha libre. The promotion held its first event in May – “We Own The Sky” – and kept the momentum rolling with an after-party that saw fans mingling with their new favorite luchadores.

The inaugural event was so successful that Lucha Brutal returned on August 1 with a tremendous follow-up performance – “Mas Brutal” – as evidenced by “This Is Awesome,” a chant universally known to wrestling fans across the world ringing out with vigor and intensity not often seen outside of a WWE arena at Christy’s Banquet Hall in Farmers Branch, TX. Lucha Brutal is building itself quite the reputation as it has put on hard-hitting and high intensity wrestling matches causing the fans in attendance to come absolutely unglued.

The match of the night saw Denton native and “Big Strong Boy” Ethan Price take on SoCal’s own Rocketboy Wilson in an incredibly brutal affair. Both Price and Wilson impressed with feats of strength and agility as the match brought them in and out of the ring, culminating in a high spot where y Wilson literally skated across Price’s back before Price was able to pull him up into a bridging German Suplex for the pin.

The match that fell just behind was the main event of the night, which saw Booker T’s “Reality of Wrestling” star and three-time champion Gino face off against New Orleans’ own self-proclaimed “Stroke Daddy” Ricky Starks. It was an incredibly moving match full of story beats and false finishes and plenty of huge action. The two stars in the making locked up for a nearly 30-minute collision, which included crowd spots and massive high-flying acrobatics clearing entire sections of the audience. Though Gino put up a valiant effort, he came up just short against Starks, who snuck the win before retreating to the entrance ramp and offering an apology to The Latin Heartthrob. Gino rejected the apology in a move that you would expect to be building the feud for later shows; however, just yesterday Starks signed with the NWA! No announcement has been made regarding his availability for the next Lucha Brutal event.

The crowd also witnessed the crowning of Lucha Brutal’s first Intergender Tag Team Champions when Metroplex Wrestling alumni Fun and Sexy beat local duo Real Life in an intergender match.

The next two shows – September 26th’s “Trial by Fire” and November 14th’s “The Winner Takes It All” – will be held at the Metroplex Wrestling Event Center in Bedford, TX. Additionally, the winners of September 26th’s fatal 4-way semi finals will face off at November 14th’s show for the first ever Lucha Brutal Championship. The September 26th show will also see the start of the Maggie Martinez Memorial Tag Team Tournament. Lucha Underground and Ring of Honor’s Thunder Rosa will be returning and MPX and DCW alumni Chandler Hopkins will be making his debut.

One of the best things about Lucha Brutal is its eagerness to attract fans to its product, making it very accessible for folks outside the local area by offering matches and highlights on its website and YouTube. After you’ve been dazzled by the future of lucha libre, tickets for future events can be purchased at luchabrutal.com.
