‘We’ve Been Taking Down Monsters’

An exclusive interview with Salina de la Renta.

When I sat down with Salina de la Renta of Promociones Dorado, I hoped to gain an understanding of what makes wrestling’s biggest rising star tick. While Salina was very forthcoming when it came to telling her story, I also learned that she’s a canny businesswoman who agrees with Benjamin Franklin that “three can keep a secret, if two of them are dead” when it comes to her plans for MLW.

Since late June, Salina has partnered with Low Ki to keep a stranglehold on the power structure in MLW. During that time, we’ve seen Low Ki capture the MLW World Heavyweight Championship from Shane Strickland and defend the title against a variety of challengers, including Rey Fenix on last week’s episode of MLW Fusion. I attempted to learn more about MLW’s devious duo with mixed success.

David Gibb: You’re partnered with the MLW World Heavyweight Champion Low Ki. What exactly is the relationship between the two of you? Who works for whom? You have Promociones Dorado; he has Black Friday Management. What’s the relationship with you and Low Ki?

Salina de la Renta: “Let’s put it like this: When you combine two amazing things, then you’re creating something almost indestructible. What we’re building, we’re building together. It’s not that he’s my boss. I am not his boss. This is a partnership. We are equals. Yes, at one point, he collected a bounty for me, but that was a simple business transaction – it doesn’t mean he’s on my payroll.”

DG: What can we expect from Low Ki in front of his home crowd in New York?

SDLR: “I cannot tell you what Low Ki is going to do because that’s a question that only Low Ki can answer.”

DG: We recently saw you and Low Ki bump into Tommy Dreamer backstage on an episode of MLW Fusion. MLW has announced that Dreamer will face Brody King at Fury Road. Where are you and Ki with Tommy Dreamer?

SDLR: “I just met Dreamer. Low Ki knows him. I do not.”

In addition to her relationship with MLW’s main champion and drawing card, the CEO of Promociones Dorado has been locked in a talent war with Konnan, who she believes poached MLW World Tag Team Champions Pentagon Jr. and Rey Fenix from her stable through devious means. Konnan is slated to be in the corner of AAA and Lucha Underground star Daga when he challenges for Low Ki’s World Heavyweight Title. Although her determination to defeat Konnan was evident in Salina’s voice as I talked to her, she played her cards extremely close to the vest, in spite of my prodding.

DG: You’ve got to have a counter-move coming up against Konnan. Any chance we see something related to that happening on October 4 in New York?

SDLR: “I will not address Konnan in this situation.”

If managing a World Champion and fighting continued skirmishes with a business rival seems like a full plate, then you don’t know the ambition of Salina De La Renta. In addition to providing corner support for Low Ki, Promociones Dorado will also represent the legendary Chairman of Professional Wrestling, LA Park, as he takes on the independent scene’s hottest veteran, Pierre-Carl Ouellet (PCO).

DG: You’ll also be in the corner of LA Park as he takes on PCO. Without saying too much, what kind of strategy do you think will be most effective against the French Canadian Frankenstein?

SDLR: “When you’re talking about LA Park, you’re bringing up someone who is highly trained when it comes to massive destruction. Yes – PCO is not human. Yes – he has abnormal strength, and he is a monster – I’m not going to say he isn’t a monster. But we’ve been taking down monsters. Isn’t that the whole point?”

Since Salina and I spoke, Fury Road has turned into something of a family affair for Promociones Dorado, as she will represent not just the transcendent LA Park, but also his son El Hijo de LA Park this Thursday at the Melrose Ballroom in Long Island City, Queens.
