Champ vs. Champ at MLW: Intimidation Games

MLW World Champion Shane Strickland faces Impact World Champion Pentagon Jr. this Thursday.

After a hot debut on beIN Sports last week, MLW ups the ante with a champion versus champion bout this Thursday in Orlando.

MLW World Heavyweight Champion Shane “Swerve” Strickland will defend his title against the newly crowned Impact World Champion Pentagon Jr. The sadistic luchadore has been riding a wave of momentum over the past week, defeating his brother Fenix to become the number-one contender on MLW: Fusion, and then emerging victorious in a triple threat at the Redemption pay-per-view.

This will be Strickland’s first title defense since winning the tournament to crown a new champion earlier this month. With Salina de la Renta by Pentagon’s side, the odds are stacked against the MLW Champion.

As matchmakers assemble the initial MLW Top 10 rankings, every fighter will be putting out their best effort in the hopes of attaining a coveted title shot. Fenix, also presented by Salina de la Renta’s Promociones Dorado, looks to avenge last week’s loss by facing fellow high-flying sensation ACH. With his sights set on a three-match winning streak, UFC’s “Filthy” Tom Lawlor will scrap with Fred Yehi, the man of a 1,000 counters.

In a culture clash, the preppy Maxwell J. Friedman will take on former WWE Superstar MVP. Although Friedman has been preparing with his Ivy League alma mater Dartmouth College crew team in what his camp refers to as “intense cardio sessions,” no amount of training can top an education from the school of hard knocks. A master of “ghetto strong style,” MVP is a globetrotting veteran from the streets of Miami, a tough as nails brawler with a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu background.

Speaking of former WWE Superstars, Jack Swagger will make his MLW debut under the alias Jake Hager, going one-on-one against the “Hawaiian Hulk” Jeff Cobb. Well, it won’t exactly be mano-y-mano as Hager will be accompanied by former WCW manager Colonel Robert Parker. “I recommend Mr. Cobb check his insurance policy and make the appropriate accommodations at the finest hospital as he has never faced a hoss like Mister Jake Hager in his career,” Colonel Parker said in a press release.

Parker’s Stud Stable will also be in action as new recruit Mike Parrow joins forces with the Dirty Blondes to take on Jimmy Yuta, Jason Cade and Rhett Giddins, who returns to action after a bicep injury put him on the shelf this winter.

Team Filthy will present the first Simon Gotch Prize Fight: “Any and all gentlemen with superb athletic ability are welcomed to step up and try to test their prowess.  If they can last just 5 minutes in an exhibition against the “Great Gotch” without being pinned or conceding, they will win a LARGE sum cash reward.”

“Bad Boy” Joey Janela was scheduled to take on Brian Cage, but The Machine has been replaced by a mystery opponent. Janela is one of the most resilient, unpredictable forces in all of wrestling. Plus, he’ll have the enchanting Aria Blake in his corner.

In a battle of the besties, “Modern Day Wonder Woman” Santana Garrett will square off with Chelsea Green, aka former Impact Women’s Champion Laurel Van Ness. Garrett’s undefeated streak may come to an end at the hands of her BFF.

Also in action will be the mighty 469-pounder Barrington Hughes, who broke his own record last week for the shortest match in MLW history, squashing Chico Adams in just eight seconds. The “Caramel Colossus” has signed an open contract for Wednesday, leaving fans to wonder just who has the balls to step into the ring with the super heavyweight.

MLW: Intimidation Games takes place at the Gilt Nightclub in Orlando on Thursday, May 3rd.
