Remembering Luna Vachon, 10 Years Later

WWE Hall of Famer Luna Vachon passed away on August 27, 2010.

Luna Vachon was a lifetime member of the Cauliflower Alley Club, as was her father Paul “Butcher” Vachon and her uncle “Mad Dog” Maurice Vachon. Luna passed away on August 27, 2010, but as a testament to the impact she had on the wrestling world, she was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame Class of 2019. Her ashes are scattered at the ranch formerly owned by her close friend Andre the Giant in Ellerbe, NC.

In this throwback, CAC lifetime member Paul Stratoti shares his tribute to Luna, with remembrances from her peers on the independent wrestling scene.

Tuff Tina: “Luna was a phenomenal woman. She always told me to keep my head up, keep my heart strong and when it comes to wrestling, tolerate it and love it. Luna had a phenomenal way of looking at life and she said what she had to say. She never sugar coated anything when I met her.”

TC Reynolds (MCW’s Doink the Clown): “Luna and I never crossed paths much as we only saw each other in the buildings and airports. One time while down in Virginia, I was on a show with Luna. Back at the motel room, she was having a good time having two midgets walk on leashes like dogs. They were all pretty drunk and the midgets were barking through the hallways…On a personal note, Luna was a very nice girl and I have a lot of nice memories about her. May God rest her soul.”

Stratoti: “Yes, may God rest her soul. I was honored to meet her at the Cleveland All Pro Wrestling 14th Anniversary and she took me by surprise when she slapped that killer choke hold on yours truly during that time.”

TC: “Luna could be that way. She was very reactive and spontaneous. She had a heart of gold and a few demons as we all do. I will always have fond memories of Luna Vachon.”

Greg Valentine: “What can I say? Luna was a manic depressive, but she had a great big heart. She was a great tough-as-nails woman wrestler who everybody will miss. There’s really no reason for a 48-year-old to die like that. I’ve known the whole Vachon family including Vivian, Luna’s aunt. Vivian was one of the first women wrestlers in that family who got killed in a horrible car crash up in Montreal and taken down young by a drunk driver. It’s a real tragedy. They gave her a nice write up in the Saint Petersburg Times down in Florida since she lived in the Newport, Tampa Bay area.”

Jessicka Havok: “You know, Luna was one of my idols when I was growing up and was one of the reasons why I became a professional wrestler. I liked her style. She was rough and tough and wasn’t your typical diva persona. When I got to wrestle her in that hardcore match a few years ago in Cleveland All Pro Wrestling it wasn’t what I had expected and I didn’t have that great of a time because she was able to overpower me in ways I had not expected. Recently, when I heard about her passing, it saddened me. Despite my being a heel and even though we had our differences, I really don’t wish that end on anybody. My condolences go out to her friends and her family.”

Longtime MCW fan Ron (aka Prince Romp): “I saw Luna last April at the Cauliflower Alley Club reunion. I didn’t speak to her and I feel terrible for her father and Mad Dog, who autographed my book of him for me.”

Longtime MCW fan John Barton: “I always had a fun time watching whatever she was doing and one time a close friend of mine saw her and got a card for me that she once autographed. I still have it.”

Ring announcer Sarah: “Luna was the first wrestler that I knew who was more tough than sexy, which made her attractive. She was scary, animalistic and ready to kick ass at any moment. She scared me and I liked that.”

Nick Andrews, the voice of MCW wrestling and WRQK 106.9: “I remember Luna as one of the most vicious female wrestlers ever. She was the most brutal in the industry and we are going to miss her.”

As for this reporter, I’m happy to have met her. Early on she was in Kevin Sullivan’s satanic cult and then later she became a brutal WWE oddity. When I asked her whether she would be willing to grant me an interview sometime, she stated that we could do a telephone interview at any time. Unfortunately, I never got around to it.

Nonetheless, I shall always regard Luna Vachon as my CAC sister.
