Love In The Air And In The Wrestling Ring

What’s the greatest wrestling wedding?

In this edition of The Wrestling Estate roundtable, the gang waxes poetic about love in the air and in the wrestling ring.

Who is your favorite wrestling couple?

Jack Goodwillie: The greatest of all time has to be Edge and Lita. They were like the anti-Macho Man Elizabeth: dirty, sleazy, and as a kid, you just loved to hate them. The amazing thing is that no one knew Lita had it in her, and her performance helped elevate Edge so that’s about as symbiotic of a relationship as you’re going to find. They really fed off each other. I would also throw Tommy Dreamer and Beulah McGillicutty out there, and ironically enough, these four worked a match together!

John Corrigan: Jimmy Garvin and his “gorgeous” valet Precious. Their chemistry was infectious, probably because they’re married in real life.

Calvin Gibbon: Randy Savage and Elizabeth. The real-life drama that played out in front of the camera over the years was incredible. Romance and tragedy mixed together. True love does blossom on WWE TV.

Anthony Mahalis: My favorite wrestling couple is the “It couple:” Miz and Maryse. They are the most must-see couple in the company, and show no signs of slowing down. The bit they did acting like Cena and Nikki Bella leading up to WrestleMania 33 was very entertaining.

David Gibb: Trinity and Jon. They wade just the right depth into reality show silliness.

Evan Cross: Daniel Bryan and Kane. There have been a lot of weddings in wrestling, but not many couples therapy sessions. It was nice to see two people work out their differences and move forward.

Have you watched the Mixed Match Challenge?

Goodwillie: No.

Corrigan: Nope. I’m pretty bitter about Braun flirting with Alexa.

Gibbon: Definitely. I’ve been following it as it’s released on the WWE Network. I’m rooting for the unstoppable duo known as Awe-Suka.

Mahalis: I have not watched the Mixed Match Challenge. That is strictly because I always forget about when it’s on. I may try to catch up soon.

Gibb: Yes! I’ve enjoyed the MMC a lot on the whole. A twenty-ish minute show built around one match is extremely easy to watch, and even if the match isn’t great, you don’t feel stupid for investing too much time in a bad show.

Cross: No, because I don’t have Facebook and I thought it was a Facebook exclusive until five minutes ago.

If you were Cupid, which two wrestlers would make a perfect couple?

Goodwillie: It’s obviously not possible now, but it was teased ages ago before they put Dolph Ziggler with Vickie Guerrero. I think Dolph and Maria Kanellis would have had a great dynamic, probably similar to Brian Griffin and Jillian on Family Guy. Though I will say I don’t normally ship wrestlers.

Corrigan: Randy Orton and Amy Weber.

Gibbon: I’m thinking I’d create an “it couple” of Bayley and Elias. It would start off at the whole opposites attract thing. Elias as the corrupting influence, but sweetheart Bayley eventually gets the good side out of him.

Mahalis: Charlotte and Bobby Roode make the most sense – they would make a great heel tandem. How about you make them both heels, anyway? Thanks in advance, WWE

Gibb: If I was cupid, I would’ve done better work with Mean Gene and Sensational Sherri. They always looked/sounded like they were one arrow away from the most passionate affair in wrestling history.

Cross: Becky Lynch and Lance Storm seem like they’d balance each other out nicely.

What wrestling event would make for the most romantic Valentine’s Day date?

Goodwillie: I’ll start by saying Valentine’s Day is a terrible, corporate holiday only designed to make me feel worse about my life, which in reality isn’t that bad, but serves as a yearly reminder to myself of what I lack. Personal feelings aside, if I did have someone and that someone could tolerate wrestling, I’d probably surprise them with WrestleMania tickets, which is less than two months out, anyway. It’s the thought that counts, after all, and like I said, Valentine’s Day sucks. Although St. Valentine’s Day Massacre 1999 is one of my favorite wrestling shows ever.

Corrigan: National Pro Wrestling Day…it’s free!

Gibbon: Wrestlemania XII. It’s just a great event overall, and after you see Bret and Shawn go an hour, you and your date will want to go an hour! Who will be the iron man or iron woman in your life?

Mahalis: Have to go with WrestleMania. That shows that you are willing to pull out all the stops for that special person in your life.

Gibb: First, we enjoy a romantic, candlelight dinner at The World. Next, we take a romantic, dusty-whisky fueled ride in our DeLorean limo to the ’87 Slammy Awards. Then, just as you’re vibing to Vince’s rendition of Stand Back, I get down on one knee and pop the question.

Cross: A local indy, the most intimate wrestling event you can attend.

What’s the greatest wrestling wedding?

Goodwillie: My first instinct was to say the Edge and Lita wedding that I discussed in the Kane roundtable. But actually, I’d be remiss in not saying the Billy and Chuck “wedding” where Eric Bischoff, disguised as a priest sneers, “Did I just hear myself say, THREE MINUTES?” before ripping the mask off and staging a 3-Minute Warning attack in the ring. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, watch the clip and tell me that’s not what wrestling is all about.

Corrigan: Have to agree with Goodwillie. From Godfather pushing one more night of heterHo fun to Eric Bischoff yanking the Scooby Doo mask off, Billy and Chuck’s “commitment ceremony” was epic.

Gibbon: Edge and Lita’s wedding will go down in history as the greatest of all time. It was a great character building moment as the new heel power couple on Raw. The wedding was chock full of surprises and classic one liners as well. Check it out.

Mahalis: HHH and Stephanie renewing their wedding vows is top notch in my book. Having HHH destroy the ring, Pedigree Vince and then take off his ring and throw it at Stephanie, pure gold. Then who can forget Stephanie’s iconic face/scream as Raw went off air?

Gibb: The Savage-Liz reception (with the snake) is the best wedding-related angle, but in terms of the ceremony itself, it’s hard to beat Roddy Piper heeling on Uncle Elmer’s honest-to-god legally binding wedding.

Cross: Macho Man and Miss Elizabeth. How many other wrestling relationships have made people cry?
