Y’all Come Back Now, New South

Rolando Perez won the Winter Warz Rumble in Westville, NJ.

New South Pro Wrestling Winter Warz Rumble

New South Pro Wrestling made quite the first impression this past weekend, holding its first event north of the Mason-Dixon line.

The Hartselle, AL-based promotion came to the Superkrazee Skid Row Academy in Westville, NJ for Winter Warz Rumble, arguably its biggest show of the year. That wasn’t the only attraction, though, as gaming company SRG Universe released the New South Brawl 2-Player Box Set, the latest addition to pro wrestling collectible card game Supershow the Game. Despite deadly tornadoes preventing members of the roster and some SRG products from making the trek, the 50 some-odd fans in attendance were still satisfied with the action-packed experience.

Boomer Hatfield opened the historic event, defeating Cabana Man Dan before being interrupted by his “father” A Very Good Professional Wrestler, formerly known as Dasher Hatfield. A cross-promotional challenge was accepted for Dec. 30 at Pizza Party Pro Wrestling in Worcester, MA: The Outfielders (Hatfield and Shea McCoy) vs. AVGPW and Dan Champion. If the latter wins, Boomer will have to unmask. If the former wins, AVGPW will have to don his old Dasher Hatfield mask and finish his career under that persona.

It’s high stakes considering AVGPW has announced he has only 10 matches left before he’s leaving the sport. He’s down to nine after losing to “Flippy Shit” Hunter Drake in controversial fashion, in which the referee stormed off after his three count was questioned and the bell was delayed. The highlight was AVGPW stopping a “This Is Awesome” chant to declare “this match is very, very good.”

Jennifer "Belle" Briggs conceived New South coming up north.
Jennifer “Belle” Briggs, lead graphic designer at SRG, pitched the idea of New South coming to New Jersey. She served as ring announcer for Winter Warz Rumble.

Tyler Franks, a pillar of New South, certainly impressed in his first outing in the tri-state area. A three-time Tag Team Champion (with Drake), as well as the winner of last year’s Winter Warz Rumble, the cocky technician forced Blank of CHIKARA fame into submission.

Donnie Janela, former New South Champion, tore the house down with Ryan Mooney. They took flight in a wild affair, soaring over the top rope and into the front row. At one point, Janela event went coast to coast, but Mooney avoided contact and followed up with a booming splash. After exchanging near falls, Kung-Fu Janela (Joey’s “cousin”) finally tamed “The Rabid Honey Badger.”

And then there was the battle for the New South Tag Team Titles.

Pretty Empowered (Kenzie Paige & Ella Envy) defended against Jordan Oliver and Ellis Taylor of Young Dumb N Broke. The challengers immediately isolated Paige, targeting her arm and making frequent tags to keep each other fresh. When Paige finally made it to Envy, the latter was a house of fire, even displaying Trish Stratus-esque flexibility in avoiding a closeline. However, the devious challengers extinguished her momentum and went back to their game plan.

After 30 minutes and the ladies refusing to quit while locked in simultaneous submissions, the match was declared a draw. The fans wanted five more minutes and even though they had been tortured, Paige & Envy weren’t going back down South without a victory they could be proud of. So, they offered to continue the match, but Charlie Tiger, another member of Young Dumb N Broke, attacked Paige outside the ring. With Envy left all alone, Oliver and Taylor hit a double superkick and spike piledriver to get the pin…

But Paige made the save! With all four competitors back in the ring, the champions countered simultaneous suplexes, cradling the challengers to retain the belts.

Hard to believe the show wasn’t over after that, but in the main event, Rolando Perez outlasted 29 other competitors to win the 2021 Winter Warz Rumble and earn a future title shot at New South Champion Adam Priest.

“Miami Ice” isn’t known for his patience, but if he wanted to wait until New South returned to New Jersey, the fans would surely appreciate it.
