Joey Ace Unifies ECWA, WORLD-1 Championships

Santa thanked the ECWA fans for all their support.

Instead of finding coal in his stocking, Joey Ace will have plenty of gold on Christmas morning.

The Five-Star Studd walked into The Jersey Dugout on Dec. 5 with the ECWA Heavyweight Championship, and left with the WORLD-1 Wrestling Championship, too. The 60 some-odd fans in attendance (75 paid for a sellout under COVID-19 restrictions) were treated to an impromptu WORLD-1 title fight earlier in the night, as Mike Law successfully challenged Travis Lee, setting up a unification main event. It made sense considering that ECWA acquired WORLD-1 in June, the rosters have blended and all events since the pandemic have emanated from WORLD-1’s home in Morganville, NJ.

So, Law marched into the highly anticipated main event against his former PCA brethren with the stakes being higher than ever. It didn’t take long for the action to spill outside the ring as Law hit a Cactus closeline with both men crashing onto the artificial turf. Law followed up by cracking Ace’s spine with a chair, with referee John Finegan being very lenient considering the historic circumstances. Ace got a reprieve from the onslaught, ducking a haymaker and backdropping Law into the apron.

The cagey champion then went to work on Law’s back, locking him in a bow and arrow, as well as an abdominal stretch (using the ropes for extra leverage behind the ref’s back). When Law tried to mount a comeback, Ace quickly cut him off with a picture-perfect dropkick. Summoning strength from the crowd, Law retaliated with a double-arm DDT and a beautiful Northern Lights Suplex, but that wasn’t enough to keep Ace down. So, throwing caution to the wind, Law soared outside with a suicide dive that almost lived up to its name.

Back inside the ring, Ace hit his version of Sliced Bread No. 2 and ascended the turnbuckle for his trademark flying elbow. Somehow, Law got up in time to cut him off, but as they jockeyed for position, Ace knocked Law back down and finished him up Macho Man-style to claim both the ECWA and WORLD-1 Championships. Afterward, Ace helped Law to his feet, seemingly ready to bury the hatchet, but the “Saltiest Dog” then lifted his leg and low blowed Law. Ace put the boots to his former stablemate until Mr. Ooh La La, the number-one contender, made the save.

It was an exhilarating ending to ECWA’s Christmas Spectacular, which also saw Legacy Champion “Classic” Eric Martin turn back the challenge of Chris Wylde and The Marvelous Ones retain the Tag Team Titles against Sam Shields in a handicap match. Mr. Ooh La La continued his winning ways in a triple threat with Rey Calitri and Napalm Bomb.

In the most emotional encounter, Kekoa got revenge on “The Closer” Joe Martinez for screwing him out of the ECWA Heavyweight Championship at PretzelMania IV. The Flyin’ Hawaiian certainly had to earn it, overcoming a sneak attack, chairshot and everything Martinez had to offer. After planting Kekoa with a Death Valley Driver, Martinez pleaded with his longtime rival to just stay down. Of course, anyone that has seen Kekoa over the past decade knows that the “courageous warrior” never gives up. A superkick and a splash off the top rope gave Kekoa his final victory in ECWA.

And you can’t have a Christmas show without an appearance from the big man. That’s right, Santa Claus came out at the end of the night and gave everyone a present as they were leaving. We’re not talking Dollar Store trinkets or crane machine prizes – Santa gave out WORLD-1 DVDs, including a Best of Adam Cole (Bay Bay!).

Now that’s how you thank the fans for supporting you during such an unbelievable year.
