Dough More Mr. Nice Guy: Joey Ace Retains At PretzelMania IV

The ECWA Heavyweight Champion pissed off his remaining fans.

Joey Ace is a real jerk.

Whatever goodwill the ECWA Heavyweight Champion earned at the Super 8 has been squandered. He’s sacrificed his friends, blown off reporters and taken every shortcut to hang onto the title. And at PretzelMania IV, he went too far.

As he entered The Jersey Dugout in Morganville, NJ, Joey Ace strutted around the ring, drawing the ire of the 85 some-odd fans in attendance (masked and socially distant, of course). One fan in the front row, a little girl, made a beautifully crafted sign for him. Literally his only supporter in the building, her eyes lit up as he approached her. Joey Ace took the sign, smiled and then smashed it.

The girl gasped, tears falling down her cheek. Her friends and family were in shock, heartbroken at the disgusting display. Her father stood up, confronting the champion for his heinous act. But Ace didn’t care, hell, he relished it. The ECWA has long been a family-friendly promotion, and PretzelMania traditionally draws an audience full of children. Well, the Grinch came early this year, wearing gold instead of green.

Thankfully, that girl had a knight in shining armor: Kekoa. A 13-year veteran of the squared circle and a mainstay in ECWA, The Flyin’ Hawaiian replaced Mike Law as Joey Ace’s challenger. (Law and ECWA Legacy Champion Eric Martin voluntarily pulled themselves from the event after competing on a show where another performer had tested positive for COVID-19.) The stakes had never been higher for Kekoa; not only was he seeking justice for that girl, but this was his last title shot. He’s scheduled for one more ECWA event, and then he’s leaving the company to move to Florida. If he wanted to be the best independent wrestler in the tri-state area one more time, it was now or never.

Kekoa brought the fight to the champion, repeatedly taking him down and then closelining him over the top rope. It looked like Kekoa was going to take a nasty spill, too, but the incredible athlete skinned the cat, following up with a somersault plancha to the artificial turf. As despicable as Joey Ace is, he’s a cagey competitor. Before Kekoa could take flight again, Ace tripped him, his face bouncing off the apron. Back inside the ring, Ace continued to use his environment to his advantage, flinging Kekoa hard into the turnbuckles and nailing him with the best dropkick in the sport. Taking a high risk of his own, Ace attempted a moonsault, but crashed and burned after Kekoa rolled away.

Momentum shifted; the crowd rallied behind Kekoa as he rocked the champion with his patented chops before planting him with a huge flapjack. His adrenaline flowing, Kekoa broke out into his tribal dance, signaling that the end was near. Somehow, Joey Ace evaded a superkick and when Kekoa tried again, Ace dodged and referee John Finegan went down. Ace capitalized, hitting Kekoa with a version of sliced bread No. 2 and then ascending the turnbuckle for his signature flying elbow drop.

However, the ref was still out cold. So, Ace showed his true colors yet again, retrieving the championship belt with evil intentions on his mind. Before he could strike, though, “The Closer” Joe Martinez (who returned to ECWA earlier in the night) ran out and stopped Ace. The distraction allowed Kekoa to superkick Ace and go for the cover, but the ref was only able to count to one before passing out again in the ultimate troll job.

As Kekoa tried waking him up, that scumbag Ace hit a low blow. He went for the belt again, but Martinez grabbed it out of his hands, only to crack Kekoa’s skull himself! The crowd was stunned, and so was Ace. Apparently, that’s why they call Martinez “The Closer.” The ref finally revived, and Ace picked up the easy three count.

But the fans weren’t leaving PretzelMania IV feeling salty, especially that little girl. Kekoa shook the cobwebs, pulled himself back to his feet and knocked out Joey Ace with a superkick. Then, Kekoa brought that girl into the ring and she stood tall over the sleazy champion, soaking in the adulation of the crowd.

ECWA will sorely miss Kekoa, but you don’t want to miss his last night on Dec. 5.
