Gemma Cross, Leyla Hirsch Enter ECWA Super 8 Chickfight

The all-women’s one-night tournament comes to Delaware on March 16.

The Wrestling Estate has learned the next two names scheduled for this year’s ECWA Super 8 Chickfight Tournament.

Gemma Cross and Leyla Hirsch are scheduled for the one-night tournament on March 16 at the Asbury United Methodist Church in New Castle, Delaware.

Cross is a familiar face to ECWA fans, having recently challenged Women’s Champion Miss Jasmine and Sammi Pandora in a triple threat at ECWA Toys For Tots in December. The Jersey girl has competed for three years throughout numerous independent promotions in the Northeast.

She just so happens to be celebrating her 26th birthday the day of the tournament.

“It has been a goal of mine to be a part of the ECWA Super 8 Tournament since starting my career,” Cross told The Wrestling Estate. “If you look back in history, this tournament really helped so many talented people shine and become success stories down the road. I have worked hard to get to this point. I am here to not only prove to myself, but the supporters and the doubters that Gemma Cross will not be taken lightly. It’s my time, 2019 is my year and I’m ready to go to war. Someone bring the birthday cake because when I win, we celebrate!”

Meanwhile, Hirsch brings an international flavor to the tournament, hailing from Moscow, Russia. Her amateur wrestling background has made her a lethal weapon in CZW over the past year.

Already announced for the ECWA Super 8 Chickfight are Missouri native Quinn McKay – an ex-Roller Derby competitor who hones her wrestling craft in Illinois-based AAW – and Women of Honor standout Gabby Ortiz, a Philly product of the Monster Factory and Ring of Honor Dojo. In 2017, Ortiz was the subject of a Philly.com profile piece that covered her balance as Mayor Jim Kenney’s receptionist by day, and pro wrestling starlet by night.

After laying dormant in 2018, the ECWA Super 8 Chickfight returns for its fifth year, finding a new home in Delaware. Similar to its male counterpart – the 23rd annual men’s Super 8 takes place April 20 – this tournament has become a launching pad for undiscovered, up-and-coming talents to get noticed throughout the industry.

Look no further than the three previous tournament winners: Impact Wrestling and Women of Wrestling star Tessa Blanchard was the inaugural winner in 2014, followed by current NXT signee Deonna Purrazzo winning back-to-back the next two years and then Karen Q, who competed in the second Mae Young Classic, took home the trophy in 2017.

Previous tournament participants include Britt Baker of All Elite Wrestling, current WOW Champion Santana Garrett, Impact Wrestling star Kiera Hogan and former ECWA Women’s Champion Christina Marie, to name a few.

ECWA Super 8 Chickfight takes place Saturday, March 16, at the Asbury United Methodist Church in New Castle, Delaware.
